Today while out, the overheat alarm went off, I pulled the cowling and could keep my hand on the head for 3 seconds as I have read here that you should be able to do. I have a good stream on the tell tale. After a while it seem to get a bit hotter, then the alarm just quit sounding. The motor is a fresh rebuilt by Shaver St Marine. What should I be looking for here, thanks

Usually during an overhaul, both thermostats are replaced. Do you know if the marine dealership did that? There is a stat for each head. Do you know if one or both heads seem hot? An stat that is stuck closed can result in an overheat at idle on that side of the block, even though you have a strong impleller and telltale stream. I'd probably rent a laser temp gun from a local auto parts store for a few days to track just how hot the engine is getting. Hard to tell exactly with your hand. The overheat warning sounds at 212 degrees-pretty hot. 145-150 degrees is normal
