Re: Overheat alarm on 1995 evinrude 60hp

well after fatzbullet's explanation i can see how it all goes and everything now makes sense.

its easy for me now to see that the 2 wires from the diode are 1 to the temp sensor and 1 to the powerpack.
the 2 wires joined at the diode will let the powerpack recive a overheat trigger and go into slow mode, and a overheat
trigger will go through the diode to sound the alarm but not back due to the diode ?

does this sound about right ??????????

if so then someone before me has played around with this and messed it right up.

now if this is right then i could just have a bad temp alarm sensor and that sent the powerpack into S.L.O.W mode.

Yeah, now you've got it.
The photo shows it, the two wires from the diode are connected together and that's definitely wrong. Like you said, connect one to the temp sensor (brown/blue) and the other one to the power pack (SLOW input).
The temp sensor's white/black wire is the cold engine spark advance (Quick Start) and is connected correctly.

As soon the buzzer/temp sensor circuit is working again, you will find your SLOW issue (if it's still there) because you can hear when the temp sensor is activated.

Now I'm sorry that I made you open the harness and remove the diode as it wouldn't have been necessary. I wasn't aware the bullets can be plugged this way. One is always wiser afterwards.

im not concerned about opening up the loom, its gonna be a lot tidier with new tape than factory mess.
ive seen a few like this that have not been very pretty on the loom finnish.

Anyway, i should see if its a bad alarm sensor now,
like you say, if the S.L.O.W comes in due to sensor i will hear the buzzer.

I will keep a check on the temp, if engine is cold i know to replace the sensor.

As soon as i take the boat out again i will post results and update for sure.

thanks for everyones help and advice on this problem, and for being patient with me.
without advice, help and suggestions i wouldnt of had a clue.

i though a diode was something just in radio's, now i know better.

Not so confused anymore

Well i hope to get the boat out this weekend if the weather allows.
i will be testing for this particular problem again.

ive got an idea its gonna be something more than the alarm sensor as my friend said when we were on the boat he definitely
pulled the wire from the alarm sensor incase it was that causing the problem !!!!!!!

ive since got a temp guage and i am also ready to replace the sensor with another one.
But untill it happens again i will not be changing anything.

you cant remedy unless the problem is happening at the time.

if its a sensor then fine, if its the powerpack then fine as long as i know what it is for sure.

electrical problems are ok as long as they are not intermittant.
i prefer a solid problem so it can be traced easy and the rectified.

as soon as i know more about this i will post on here results 100% definite.

Re: Overheat alarm on 1995 evinrude 60hp

Today had the engine running for 2 hours in a test tank and no problems yet.

But i just couldnt get the engine upto a decent temperature to see whats going to happen.
The highest temp i could get was 42 deg c......thats around 107 deg F...so not much of a test.
temp test was done using a probe on a multi meter.... accuracy is about +/- 2 deg c.

I did notice the engine comming out of the quick start type thing at around 25deg c......

as soon as i get chance i will be testing on the river at wide open throttle to see how it performs now.
