i am hoping someone can help me on this one. i have a 1989 bayliner with a force 85 hp engine. my overheat buzzer started sounding today on the lake. i was going slowly in reverse when it happened. there is a steady stream of water coming out the holes in the back. when i first got in the water the engine would not start, acting like a dead battery. i knew that was not the case because i just charged it. i checked my connections, wiggled the wires and it started. same thing happened after the buzzer started. also my horn recently stopped working. coincidence? this was also only the third time i had the boat out this year. any thoughts? thanks for any input.

Re: overheat buzzer

Sounds electrical to me, but had you been running hard prior to it going off?

Re: overheat buzzer

Prob. The over heat sensor on the back of the motor is defective. Its a common
prob. and an easy cheap fix. For the horn you might look at the fuse box and see if
Any are blown.

no, the engine was actually off for quite a while prior to it going off.

Re: overheat buzzer

You might try direct 12Vs to your horn to see if it works. Mine w/n sound with direct 12Vs and I knew it was the horn. Ripped the horn open and it had rusted too bad to work. The horn replacement was a quick fix and it serves as my over-heating warning also. jow

Re: overheat buzzer

Had one do the same thing on my B.O.A.T.125 force outboard. Replaced the overheat sensor
and all was well. Turns out its a common prob. You might try pulling it out and cleaning it then
reinstall and see what happens.

Re: overheat buzzer

Horn should have nothin to do with the overheat sensor.
Get a screwdriver and a can of WD and get busy.Same on the battery.
Worst thing for a boat is letting it set.
Only 3 times a year. When was the impeller last changed?
Still need to do PM on em.J

Re: overheat buzzer

Thermostat opens and closes for water flow to cool the motor. Thermoswitch is
heat sensor that sets off your buzzer indicating overheating. On some motors not yours it will shut the motor down. So no not the same part.
