Hey southkogs, I can't recall what engine you have - not to be picky cuz 120psi is good, but if you have the GM 3.0l it should be around 135. I had a similar situation with incorrect compression with my boat when I got it, 120, 140, 180, 160. After valve adjustment I have 130 across the board. Just a thought - while you're in there....

Thanks Vinnie: I've got the 250 inline 6 165HP. Right now, the engine is the least of my concerns though. Looks like I've locked up my upper gear case. Still putzing with things to see for sure.

UPDATE: This mess was spread out over a couple of other topics, but the end result were that I did lock up an upper drive as well as the major overheat. Turned out to be a catastrophic failure in the upper gear case that I think killed the impeller and the gears pretty quickly.

I figured out the engine was mostly okay over last summer and started a hunt for a replacement upper (cheapest alternative I could find). I located the upper just after Christmas, and spent the spring doing some bits and pieces as well as assembling things (fixed a leak I had in the transom too).

Reassembled everything this spring, and now by mid-June, we've been out on the ole' gal half a dozen times and she's running fine. There's a little engine knock that I don't have figured out just yet. Oil looks okay and temps are fine. I think I'll probably take her out a couple more times and then do a compression test and look at a few other bits. Then I'll start a new topic if I find anything.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions along the way. Y'all helped save a Stringer for yet another year :)
