i have a 2000 150h.p. OX66. I bought the boat used 6 months ago and it had about 50 hours on it. The boat was not used much. Last week after putting another 50 hours on it I had a bearing failure. The mechanic says I need a new powerhead. We'll I'm obviously a little dissappointed with Yamaha right now but I will stay with their product.
I'm looking for info. on new powerheads from Yamaha. The mechanic says it will be a brand new powerhead from Yamaha for about $4000. I can't find any info for brand new powerheads from yamaha I just see on the site where they (actually a company that cantracts for Yamaha) remanufactures old ones. They don't manufacture the 150 ox66 any more so I don't understand why they would have new powerheads. Has anyone had any experience with a new Yamaha powerhead? Are they reliable? Is it new or rebuilt? Should I go with a whole new motor for 10k plus? Mechanic says lower unit is in good condition, only has 100 hours.

Sorry so long

Re: ox66 power head

hello
its rare to see a bearing failure. is the crank reusable? is the block damaged beyond boring?
to many dealers quit rebuilding them cause they got to complacent with just replacing a powerhead.
there are several companies that do reman yammies. hydro-tec used to do it for yammie but after a falling out its done no more.give some info on how the motor was running just prior to failure.

The motor ran great. It even ran great minus a cylinder after the bearing failed and the rod(I guess) broke. Just with a loud knock. I shut down the motor immediatly. Mechanic said crank was bad. He didn't comment on the block. He did say a reman. from yamaha was around 3200 and might as well go with the new one for 4000

Re: ox66 power head

check with southwest marine.
they have a generous core policy and a 15 month warrenty. your piston most likely failed first but with EFI you will be amazed how well it will compensate. usual failures are bad/contaminated o2 sensor or a bad diaphram in the low pressure pumps. if either is not corrected the next powerhead will pop. that is why I always reccomend a full throttle run each time the boat is used. if you notice the rpm's a few hundred down odds are the O2 sensor is going south. if you run above 4000 rpm with a defective O2 sensor # 1 will usually cook. if you continue to run a rod will fail due to the extra load of the piston dragging.

thanks for all the advice. Wish I had read this board before the failure. Live and learn!

nah you would not have spent the money to do the maint. nobody does. its a pisser but its how it is. a vast majority of customers try to shade the truth and a vast majoritry of techs are incompetent, thats why in the next year I am done. my plan is to take the proceeds from my propery sales and my disability from the navy and move down south :)
