Engine cuts out when I am idling for a long time. (say 5 minutes) If I pump the primer bulb, re-start, and take off, engine runs great at normal cruising speeds for extended period of time. This is a new symptom, that began earlier today.. Ran fine yesterday.

The engine is a 2000 model year and I've never replaced the fuel pumps... (which I"ve read here as something I should have been doing. )

Does this sound like a logical cause of these symptoms?

If so.. Any ideas where can I get the procedure for fuel pump replacement. Is there any special things to order to make this replacement?

Thanks.

Since this is the week-end and the pros are all out water -skiing and holding on to a margarita i'll try to give you some info. You are three years past due replacing the low pressure fuel pumps if they've never been changed.Buy complete new units from your local yamaha dealer and the black pull ties are nothing special, buy them from your auto parts store, and while your at it replace your filter preceeding the three lift pumps. Your VST tank also has a filter that needs checking .All easy to do .Something tells me you also need to drop that bottom half and replace the water-pump impeller, another easy job .Your engine is one of the best so buy a manual and learn it . A learner myself .....

dang, bernie is gonna take my job :):).

yes your symptoms describe weak pumps that cannot keep the vapor seperator full at low speeds, be aware that if a lift pump diaphram is leaking gas it can destroy rod bearings and crankshafts rapidly.

Thanks for the input... (I will replace the VST filter and the fuel pumps tomorrow.)

I positively WILL NOT take the boat out fishing tomorrow morning for stripers, no matter how good the conditions are. 8)

And one more thing.. Just so you don't think I'm intentionally abusing this fine motor, I recently changed the water pump and thermostats...
