Re: oxidation

any concerns the vaseline may cause long term damage if in the sun (assuming no UV protection). I'm tempted and believe it will look good initially but I'm concerned about long term affects like yellowing or something weird. I know the post is old but hoping someone may have feedback

Re: oxidation

after reading this, i decided im going to try the vaseline trick on a small spot on the transom and see how it works, then depending on that, i'll start doing the entire hull. wish someone had before and after pics of it though.

Re: oxidation

im convinced, i'll give it a shot! did you apply a normal coat of marine wax after that, or did you just leave it as is?

So far I've only put a coat of Vaseline on it, then wiped it off. As it has sat in the heat, I've gone out and wiped it a couple more times. When I'm sure its good and dry I'll put a coat of wax over it.

It rained today and boy you should have seen the water bead on it. LOL.

Re: oxidation

Yeah, I wonder how it will hold up on an all white boat after some time. Will it yellow it?

Re: oxidation

I am going to try this(Vaseline) Friday. I spent some good time with 3M compound and while it looks really good for it's age, it's chalky as a classroom floor right now.
Can you use a machine or is it best to apply by hand?

I suppose, but I just put it on by hand, you can actually feel it cleaning, & working that way,,, Here's another tip, if need be you can apply it over the wax, if you missed any spots, or think it could get darker, just let it dry again, & just wipe off the excess.

Re: oxidation

Gave it a go today on the green part of my boat. 27 ?C (sorry fellas 80?F) and looks great. I'll give it a day or 2 of hot weather to see how well it hold up before waxing.

Re: oxidation

I tried the Vasolene on my white boat. I figured I would give it a shot. For less than $2 what could I loose?

Well, it is just ok. It took most of the chalkiness away, but after a couple of days, it is splotchy. I put it on one day, rubbed it in really well by hand, and let it sit on, in the sun, for 24 hours. I wiped it off and it looked ok. Took it out on the water and wiped it down afterwards. Like I said, it's ok, but not great. I guess for $2 I wasn't expecting miracles.

If it's spotchy, you didn't put enough on, and, or let it soak in enough, do it again, it should get better ;)

PS I get better results when applying when the surface is the warmest it could be

Re: oxidation

A couple of days ago I rubbed some on my tonneau cover on my old truck. It was white and the real color was deep metalic blue. So far the color has come back very well for not doing any buffing and believe me this thing is in very bad shape. If I can get oops! to help me with the posting I will show the results in a couple of days when it drys out. So far i'm very impressed with the results and considering you rub it on with no buffing, WOW.
