i recently acquired a 2001 aquasport 24' walk-a-round. the wacky previous owners had the boat bottom painted as they kept it in the salt water at their dock.

i keep it on a trailer and HATE the sight of the bottom paint. i would like to paint over it with white epoxy paint such as VC Performance Epoxy with Teflon? or should i use something else. i want it to look as normal as possible without breaking the bank, right now it just looks UGLY!

Mike, Bottom paint (even modified epoxy) is soft. It would be best to remove the bottom paint and then either polish up the gel coat, or prime and paint. If you put paint over the bottom paint, it will chip easily.

Re: paint over bottom paint?

I'm in the same boat Mike (for lack of a better term).
I'll look forward to any and all answers to this question.
I'm pretty sure the previous owner of my boat did it right, and sanded the gelcoat down with about #80 grit and painted the bottom.
He also kept her in the water,(up on the mud river off weeki watchee...I know you know where that is :) )
I've thought about stripping the paint and polishing her up, but the sanding job that was done prior is probably gonna put a damper on that. :(
If you find a way that looks halfway decent, please let me know.
I think I'm probably just gonna paint her bottom with a gloss paint of some kind......maybe.

Good luck,
Dave
