I have an 88 bayliner 17ft basstryker with metalflake gelcoat on the top and inside the hull with brite white on the bottom and under the water line. I have compounded it and buffed it out but it does not last. The flake part feels rough to the touch. I want to fix some chips and minor scratches on the bottom part that is still repairable and probably paint the topside and inside the hull can I paint over the old metalflake gelcoat?

Did a Baja with original metal flake two years ago.

I used a marine two part polyurethane based primer to fill in the imperfections in my metalflake gelcoat on my speedboat, when I painted it white. I think the name was Interlux Multithane Primer, but I am not 100% sure. It worked pretty good.

You will want to wet sand the hull to a 400 grit finish to get a good quality paintjob.

you can always do a good job with high quality two part polyurethane auto clear over the gel. if you prep really carefuly and pay attention it'll come out great and hold up well...
