One of the major issues that I am going to face when restoring my boat this Spring is the vinyl. Basically, all of the vinyl. I have a simple solution to the problem.
1. Clean the vinyl as best as I can. As clean as it can possibly get.
2. Paint the vinyl with some sort of paint that will stick.
The seats aren't part of this plan. They will most likely be replaced.
Will this work???

I don't think you are going to have too much luck finding a paint that will adhere to vinyl. Most paint is going to be brittle after it dries. There are flex additives that can be added to the paint such as for rubber bumpers on a car, ect. but even then it will crack if too much pressure is applied. You might try a dye that would work on vinyl? If your going to go with new seats, I'd spend a few extra bucks and buy new vinyl. Replacing the old is not hard and will look much better.

Re: Paint...

On are boat inside the vinel was faded and torn in afew spots so replace it with thin indoor outdoor carpet looks alot better and not as hot when in the sun and you lean up against it. :)

Look into a dye made for vinyl. It works like stain on wood - it soaks in rather than sitting the surface. Car guys dye vinyl upholstery with it all the time with reasonable results. It's been years since I last used it so I can't recommend a particular brand or vendor though.

I don't mean to kick a dead horse on this one, but...If I were expecting "reasonable results", after trying to re-dye vinyl and not knowing what color your actually going to come up with, I would replace it. The fact that the vinyl is faded, probably indicates that it is worn and degraded...You could replace it all for close to the same $ and a whole lot less hassel and less questions as to what the end result would be.

HollaGeo on the inside on the side boards and below where there is a side shelf for all your odds and ends we had vinel. We pulled boards and recovered with thin indoor out door carpet thinner is easier to work with looks good and when you are out fishing in hot weather will not heat up in the sun like vinel will. Just glued and stapeled.

Re: Paint...

Plasti-kote makes a product called vinyl color. I sprayed all the vinyl in my last boat and it worked great. The problem I found though was after you buy enough $6 cans, you could have just replaced the vinyl with new.

Alden - How long does this last? Will I have to "re-paint" it? AND
How many cans did you buy??? It would cost me around $1k to replace all the vinyl (Professionally).

Re: Paint...

HollaGeo,

I don't know how long it will last. The can does mention boat vinyl and car vinyl tops on the back of the can. I suppose # of cans would depend on how much of a color change, if any you were going for. I went from blue to buckskin so I needed enough to cover. Plastikotes # is 1-800-431-5928.

Re: Paint...

I painted the seats on my golf cart with this vinyl paint that I picked up at Advance Auto Parts. It was like $5 a can and took less than one can to paint the seats. They turned out MUCH better than I expected and still look good six months later. I would recommend it. The key to using this is to make sure to clean the vinyl EXTREMELY good. I used wax and greese remover and a wire brush.
