I am doing a couple things to the boat like replaceing the motor and want to clean the outside up some. I am looking at using the Rustoleum marine top side paint 207004 unless someone says use something else. I will be using a automotive paint gun not sure which one I am using gravity or siphon feed one yet. Also any special prep work I need to be aware of. Also to do this to both sides how much paint you think it will take. The first picture is what it looks like know then a couple minutes later with paint brush.

Sand, prime, and paint away. I used the same color rustoleum last your on my Wellcraft Eclipse. I sprayed and used about 1/3 quart. Looks great, holds up, and very glossy.

Not my boat, but what I'm going after.

You might find yourself a vinyl bootstripe that wide and save yourself some hassle...unless you really like masking and sanding.

That idea crossed my mine to but since were the red is above the bumper in the rear it is wraps around the back and needs to wider than the vinyl. I am just trying to figure how much paint it would take to do this.

Its hard to tell How much paint you will need when you dont even know how many coats your puttin on there..

Like I suggested..get a gallon. ( this batch is the same color as your application if you have any repairs needed ) .

Unless you a experienced painter with equipment it would quicker...cleaner and less expensive to roll it with just as good results. It would take a quart of paint and a few days

I am not a professional painter but I have painted a couple cars and body parts and have been happy with the finished product. I looked in to rolleing and using a foam brush to tip it looks pretty simple and less taping and paper to protect the rest of the boat. I just figured you would see the roller marks. I am not sure about the coats because I didn't know if they needed something special being a boat.

I've used roll and tip a couple times with acceptable results.....not like spray, but ok.

Cadwelder you have any pictures of what you used roll and tip on. Still trying to decide which route to go.

He did a very nice job I think I am going to go roll and tip route. I am thinking about going with the pettit brand or the Interlux. I need to figure out what primer to use. I also read were some thinned it and some didn't not sure which route to go there yet.

Okay I went with the pettit easypoxy I will have it all tomorrow. Tonight I am going to try to start prepping I am going to wipe down with acetone first then I will have to start sanding not sure which grit I am going to start with then finish with. Around the back there are snaps that I need to remove I am not going to paint around them. They almost look like they are riveted on they are not screwed what is the easiest way to remove them. I am figuring I have to drill them out.

Xylene will work better than acetone to remove wax or whatever your taking off. You really dont need to prime the gel either...just clean and rough it up with 180 grit

I called pettit and they said the same thing don't worry about primer just scuff it up and paint. I will see if local hardwarre store sells xylene to use instead I also have a small chip that is about the size of a pencil eraser that I am going to see if they have a epoxy to fill it before I sand it.

I would advise you to prime. I painted my boat with Easypoxy and just thoroughly scuffed up the existing paint job (which was in good structural condition) and painted. My paint fell of in sheets from the bottom the first trip in the water.

Re: Painting stripe what you think and some pointers

The previous owner of my boat had rattle canned a blue paint job on her. I had to strip all that paint off. Fortunately for you, you don't have that problem. I used the roll/tip method and here's what I learned. Sand, Sand, Sand. Then wet sand until it really feels smooth. I used Rustoleum Marine paint and I used the Rustoleum Primer. I put on 2 coats of primer, wet sanding between coats. I mixed my paint with 30 % mineral spirits. I believe this thins the paint just enough so it "lays down" smooth. Once I roll it on, I watch for bubbles, runs etc... I use a 4" quality paintbrush to help smooth out or fix runs. Make sure the temp is at least 70 degrees. 4 coats was enough and it's been 2 years now with no trouble. Cleans and waxes just fine. I was so impressed with the results of this paint job, I painted my van using the same technique.

Re: Painting stripe what you think and some pointers

Okay I will call pettit back and see what they say about primer. I also thought I didn't want it to smooth so the paint has something to stick to. I am going to sand it tonight but I also have a little spot that I am going to see about getting some epoxy that is sandable and paintale to fix it also. I also just removed my snaps that were all in the way just drilled them right out. Will have to figure out how to put them back later.

Re: Painting stripe what you think and some pointers

After you sand it smooth, use acetone to clean it before applying the primer. The primer will adhere to the hull just fine. When I repaired dings/scratches, I used Marinetex and it worked well. It's fast and easy to work with. Those snaps were probably riveted. Just get yourself a rivet gun and some rivets and they're easy to replace.
