Okay, with recommendations here I started painting my trailer with foam roller. Know what? It looks like I painted it with a foam roller. I admit I'm not a painter and maybe a second coat will make it look better. Once at work my boss asked me to paint the restroom stalls and I told him I was a landscaper not a painter. Next day he looked at my work and said "you are a landscaper, not a painter!" Oh well, it's just a trailer.

What kind of paint are you using? It sounds like it is drying fairly fast. I generally use rustoleum on my trailer and it dries slow enough it gets a chance to flatten before it dries.

If that being so . . .You would not have done any better with a spray . . . keep going and take it slow.

Thin coats are better than one glob. Post a close up pic for better advice.

Foam rollers work well with a self leveling paint but with trailer paint probablly not. They do make a rattle can paint that works very well...amazed me how well it chilled out any rust..damm good stuff.

Okay pic, hard to tell but looks blotchy or kinda orange peel, probably just needs another coat. anything is better than the old rusty look.tailgate 011.JPG

Not enough prep work, so the paint is not adhering uniformly, Looks like you have some fish eyes. Spray would have been worser.

try picking up some hardener at tractor supply it makes the paint dry slower and that allows it to level out and the paint will be a lot tougher. In the past I have used the rustoleum enamels with a bit of hardener.

I do have some hardner from a previous project. thanks, if I can find it. Don't think it was the prep work, sanded and primed.

wiping it down before painting helps stop the fish eyes. or even a light sanding, just enough to roughen up the surface a bit

Okay Hawker, no I didn't wipe it down, no I didn't lightly sand, I just got tired of not getting project done and decided to just go for it. I'm sure you are right. Thanks, and will do those things when I do the fenders.

Based on that information it looks excellent. :)

Use a new roller and do the next coat on a day when it is not hot or windy (slow down the dry time) and I think you will be happy.

I wonder if all the people who recommended using a roller have ever painted anything before. Rollers always looks like it was rolled on. Spray is always smoother (if not over-applied). I would have sprayed if I were you. In fact, I did spray my trailer!

I did mine with a FOAM roller and it turned out great.

Re: Painting trailer with foam roller

A lot of people don't have a spray rig and a paint booth to work in, and if done right a foam roller looks just fine.

For that matter the frame should be soda blasted and have the rust spots filled with a epoxy putty then primed with a non sand able primer then painted if you want to get technical.

But most people don't have a more than a grinder and a wire brush and a foam roller dose a very nice job with a bit of surface prep.

Being a salt water boater I dont understand the affinity for a trailer with an aircraft quality paint job. For me bare aluminum is freaking gorgeous!

Your white trailer looks great from my boat!
