Painting under rub rail?

When I get to painting my boat I do not want to just mask the rub rail. It is the type of construction where the Cap overlaps the hull and the rub rail is riveted through the cap and hull.
I will be flipping the boat and was thinking I could remove the rub rail and re-rivet the cap and hull together. Flip-paint hull-flip-paint cap then remove the temporary rivets and then reinstall the rub rail.
Would this be an acceptable procedure? I do not know if the cap to hull joint would be strong enough without the rub rail.

the rub rail is there to hide the rivets, not structural.

Great, thanks. That is what I figured. So I will continue with my plan.
