Condensation in the boats that are covered is a killer.

Agree. Let it breathe.... and get a proper cover if you can afford it. Other recommendation are good too. Choose what is best for you. But the key is well-taken-care.

This is a cheap way to do it but has worked for me. I don't get how those custom covers don't sag with water over time, perhaps they are just very tight fitting.

That is pretty much it. They fit exactly, so the water never has a chance to even start pooling. As long as there is always a slope pointed off, the tarp just has to be tight enough to maintain that. (doesn't take much unless its a serious rainstorm)

On my tarp (oem custom fit), there is a nylon rope running around the perimeter with a rope ratchet on each side. I snug them down, and then walk around pulling the tarp down a little more, and then snug them down again. Have yet to ever have water pool on it.

For that new a boat, get a custom or semi custom cover of a good quality material. You will be glad you did.
