Part number for trim sending unit on DP-S drive

I have what I believe to be a 1996 Volvo Penta DP-S 178 (M22) outdrive...........serial number below those numbers is 3868165 also 4112019673 paired to a Volvo 7.4 (Chevy 454) and am looking for a source, or part number for said, for outdrive parts, in particular a trim sending unit (potentiometer) that I believe has gone bad, I'm trying the cheaper of the two culprits, if the sending unit is good next will be the "black box" (digital electronic unit that saves the stop points for the trim and tilt)

Well guys, I felt as though I followed all the right procedures in asking my question, filled in all numbers available, and included everything I had in front of me....................still no response, did I post in the wrong section? or do I really have something no one has heard of, or that someone can't help me with??

You posted in the right section, and there is a Volvo section here to find numbers. Unfortunately, there isn't a way of tracking down the right number for those senders. When I worked at a Volvo dealer, we would just call Volvo to find out what the number was. The parts programs are a zoo.

In the OEM programs, there is all kinds of SN breaks and notes to read to help figure it out if you had the time.

Thank you, Thank you, for the reply, can you be more specific on where the areas you are referring to can be found, I am definitely up for investing time into researching numbers and pages of data to find what I'm looking for. Time for me is cheap compared to most Stealerships and when you ask them specific questions about the electronic trim box and they say "bring in the instructions" doesn't instill a great deal of confidence!

I was referring to the OEM dealer program. It's not online.

I think I might have found what you are looking for. I believe the outdrive is the same as the SX M. Your outdrive has a 1.78:1 ratio and there are 2 part numbers you might try. Earlier version is 3849411 $140.26. Later version is 3594989 $173.33.
I have also found that the wiring from the sender to the male female plug can be corroded and cause an open circut. It is possible torepair your sender and save some cash.

Thank you, yes, you are absolutely correct, the earlier part number was 3863007 which has been replace with a newer part number 3594989 for the sender, and if by chance your electronic trim limiter goes out, and you have a DP S178 (M22) outdrive you will need a 3855773. I appreciate Don S's help along with Willowcreek's, between us all, we can find what is needed, great site and folks!

I needed this part as well recently (1997 Cobalt w/ Volvo Penta 7.4GIPLKDCE, DP-S. Found the sender at www.marinepowerservice.com (in NJ).

However, when I started to remove the sender, I found out that I could repair the frayed wires going to the sender. Sender works fine now and I have a $117 spare part ... Here's the info:
