I need a new bowl for the fuel filter at the fuel pump for my 84 488/170. It's the metal bowl that contains the fuel filter below the pump. I've been searching iboats, and can't come up with the part. Any ideas of a part number or the proper name for it?

No, it's the small bowl on the bottom of the mechanical fuel pump. It is what the regular (not f/w sep) filter sits in, and is held on with the strap. When I search the fuel system parts, and look at available fuel pumps, it's on the pump, but I just need the bowl. It's about 1.5" dia x 1.5" h.

You threw it out with the filter or drop it over the side?

No, that's not it. It's smaller, black (painted), and is next to screw #24 in the second link you gave: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...bdesc=CARBURETOR+AND+FUEL+PUMP+(165-170-3.7L) and has the 'strap' with the screw that holds it in place.

I still have mine, but the inside is rusting, and that's what caused the filter at the carb to clog. The rust I believe was caused by long period(s) of non-use, allowing for some condensation. I have no water in my fuel, but that's not saying that wasn't the case with the PO.

Re: Part number?

there is no listing for pump parts ,just the complete unit. I`d clean it up inside and run the fuel/sep filter before it

That's what I did. Cleaned it as best as I could, then re-installed it. F/W sep is already installed before it, so I'm good there. Was hoping to replace it... oh well. Thanks for all the help Dr., and that's a great link!

Had the same problem with my lawn tractor this spring, Pinholes rusted through. Cleaned it out really well and applied a thin coating of JB Weld over the rusted area (on inside). Permitex also makes an epoxy gas tank kit that would work too. If you don't have holes, the epoxy would protect the rusty metal. The alternative is to do a google search for "boat salvage", Might be able to find a fuel pump for parts. Good luck.
