Parting out the new to me 55HP..

The boat i bought Friday is going to the dump!
The 1976 55HP that i was told runs great is junk.
I rebuilt the starter today and fired it up.Compression was 65 on the bottom cylinder and 150 on the top.
The only way to keep it running is to keep bumping the choke.It spits fuel out of the bottom carb.
I also got a manual for it today and after looking it over the choke and carb linkage is half missing.
The lower unit is good,oil looks good and it shifts.
I just wonder if i could part it out and recoup some of my loss...

have you determined the reason for the low compression? could be just the head gasket

Thats OK Larky, I may pull the cover and take a look...
Just kinda bummed i was told how good it runs when i bought it.
The same cylinder with low compression is blowing fuel back out of the carb.
I'll see what some of the Johnson Gurus think about it..

That sounds like bad ring seating to me. Detonation is blowing back past the rings and has potentially compromised the reeds.

Pull the heads and take a look though. Nothing to lose.

Thats what i was thinking.I noticed a couple puffs of smoke out of the lower carb along with fuel blowing back out.
I'll pull the head tomorrow and take a look.
Too bad i could not do a proper compression check before i bought it.The starter was not working...
So much for trusting people.I should have learned by now!

If i put it on Ebay what is a fair asking price for a parts motor?
Would i be better to do it piece by piece?

Gary i just piece out that early 70's 18 i took on trade. $50 on paper, nothing really, i made $100, selling the block and guts, tiller handle, transom mount. still have the lower to sell. i did it like this, put pictures of every part, and told them to contact me, i would get shipping cost for what they wanted. then i would do a 65cent buy it now for them, and delete the part out of the master listing. saved listing fees.

Just pulled the head.The bottom cylinder ate a ring.Piston,head and cylinder walls are toast.
Just for the heck of it i called the guy who sold it.He said it ran great and he did a compression test and both were 175....Yeah right
I told him i would tow it back to him and he hung up...

Boat is going to the land fill...
Motor will be parted out and trailer i'm not sure about.

I called the Wildlife Commission and had them run the HIN...
The kid that sold it never owned it as far as they are concerned.
No way i could ever register the hull anyway.They told me to contact local Police because it was not legal for him to sell it. Got me thinking..I really don't want all that hassle but is it worth 300 bucks?

I would call him back again and tell him what you found out from the Wildlife Commission. And that your now thinking the boat may be stolen and considering calling the police. It would be interesting to see what he says.

i totally agree, if he doesn't refund your money, then call the cops. he needs to learn now, before he rips someone else off. it's not the hassle, it is the principal, that he new he did not have the title to the boat. it amounts to Fraud, and in Florida, the remedy is 3 times the fraud.

sorry to hear that gary i also have a 55 thats toast but i fortunatly
was givin the motor let me know how the ebay thing works i have a lot
of stuff but know nothing about ebay except how to look and buy.

Bummer.

But I also have a Johnson 55, 1976 that I have not run in years. Last I checked one cylinder was a lot higher psi than the other also. Oops. Too bad you weren't closer I might need some of those parts!

But did you get the boat, motor and trailer for $300? Is that what I see there? Helluva deal if so (when it supposedly worked) . I cant even get a trailer up here for $300.
