Never mind. Stupid beginner mistake. I posted a long message about not being able to shift properly on my '58 Johnson RDS-20. Sometimes it would shift into Reverse, but not back to neutral. Anyhow...to make a long story short...and to point out a simple mistake:

When I replaced the impeller, I thought I had the shift rod properly in the connector under the plate in the midsection. In reality, I just had the tip of it in there when I tightened the clamp bolt. It worked for a little while, but then pulled out of the clamp.

I didn't have it in far enough to engage the groove in the shift rod with the bolt in the clamp.

It held, for a while, with the clamp holding the tip, then slipped out, causing it to be able to shift into reverse, with the rod pressing on the clamp. But, when you tried to put it into neutral, no joy.

What was so confusing is that it worked for a while, then quit. Now I know why. Oh well.....

I can say for sure you're not the first that's happened to. With the exact same symptoms. ;)
Now I always dig out the flashlight and peer through the bolt hole in the coupler to make sure the shift shaft is fully in there.

Glad ya got it. :)
