Ok i 've done searches and didnt find annything directly relating to this.

So far i think peanutbutter is a mix of resin and wood flour right ?
And you mix the too together like pudy?

Its used for filling in holes and rounding out corners for laying up glass right?

What other uses are there for it? And is there any methods for useing it?

Thanks im just trying to get everything figured out before hand.:)

Re: Peanut butter

If you are talking about its use on mat or roven then no. Just resin and hardener - no filler.
Yes, they are just mixed together. I like to mix the resin and hardener first then add my cabosil - or whatever you use to thicken.
Yes, it can be used for most anything except the layup.
The main reason for adding any thickening agent is to keep it from running,
( drooping, sagging ).
The only hint on its use would be to make sure you finish everything as smooth as possible before it hardens. Makes for less sanding on critical areas that are seen. If it is of no importance as to finish then you don't need to be quite as critical.
Ondarvr and the other pros hopefully have more advise.

Re: Peanut butter

When I did some resto work using Rako products, the "peanut butter" term came up. With those products (2 part epoxy), I was mixing resin and hardener, which created a very thin mixture that was hard to work with. So he sent me a bag of silica along with the kit to mix in and thicken the mix as needed. The more silica I added, the thicker the mixture got (and the faster/hotter it cured!)

If I added enough silica, I could get it as thick as peanut-butter, which was indeed used for creating "fillets" inside corners for added strength, and for filling holes and depressions. Also helped tremendously when doing overhead or vertical work, as I could mix it thick enough to stick and stay without running.

Again, I used silica per his instructions as the thickening agent, not wood flour. And maybe with normal fiberglass resin you use a different product than I did with the 2 part epoxy I used. There may be other methods and I don't have a ton of experience in this stuff.

Re: Peanut butter

hello.....peanut butter....i use squrril....some people use jiffy.....but i think its too chunky to spread !

(see hull extension in progress...it has detailed instructions including pics)

it is used as a bedding compound....:ie bedding stringers.... to fill the gaps around the new transom you just made. or to place into an area that needs a filler....

you can use poly or epoxy.......the mixture here is for poly.....

resin....unwaxed....(or laminating resin)
cabosil.....
glass bubbles....(or micro ballons)

if you want....milled fibres or chopped strands....these will add more stregnth to the mix.

******you are using some really nasty stuff here****goggles, gloves, and a breathing resporator...is manditory

pour resin into a container....the amount of resin you put in is the amount of peanut butter you get.....

slowly pour in the glass bubbles (or cabosil) i dont care what one first.
mix thouroughly.....(i used a kitchen blender...it worked great)
add the next...(bubbles or cabosil)..blend
then the milled fibers......

as you add each item...you will see it slowly start to thicken.....if you have a pint of resin...use a pint...(by size...not weight) of 'cab or 'ballons
some people make it so thick it looks like cookie dough....i like it to look like soft margrine...or "peanut butter"

as far as the milled fibers....add thoes at a 1/4 ratio.......mix very thoughly....

when fully mixed.....(15 minits with a blender) 20 with a stick !

then when ready....add the catylist.....same ratio as resin....between 1.5 (cold cure) and 2.5 (hot cure)

mix very very thoughly.......another 5 mins with blender.......
there ya go.......peanut butter !

add food coloring....and spread on bread or toast with jam !

cheers
oops

Re: Peanut butter

I was going to use saw dust ( verry fine from sanding)

Will that work ?? I can get as much as i want? ( Carpenter by trade)

So i could spread some down on the hull, And lay a layer of glass on the transomglass(exterior), set the transom on the Peanutbutter and thread a set of boltz through the holes(engine mount) to help hold it in place and glass the sides / bottom of the transom in place. Right??

Floor first then transom or vice versa ??? I cant remember right now. There is a bilge area so i guess id do the transom and then fasten the bilge area to the transom. Am i right?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Re: Peanut butter

In the school system body shop we used something called "kitty hair"/ It came in a can made of resin and very small pieces of fiberglass. You just add the hardener and it worked great for fill in where laying mat didnt work. I think NAPA has it.
