Hey guys, after a long day i finally replaced both upper and lower water pump gaskets and impellor and re-installed the lower unit.

i started the motor in a bucket full of water and it started rite up and ran like a charm, but, no water was coming out the tell-tail!!!

Motor was running fine but no water! All the water-pump stuff is done.

Is there a thermostat i can clean? if so where is it? any other things to check for?

its a 1974 Mercury 500 50HP. thanks again, Neil

Re: Pee=hole wont Pee!

I would'nt run it in a bucket. Get a set of muffs that you attach a garden hose to. You may not have had it deep enough in the water bucket. My 73 barely pees at idle, but kick the rpms up slightly and it makes a respectable stream...characteristic of this year/models. Don't run without muffs unless you can submerge at least half the leg in water...otherwise the pump may not be getting water and will the impeller will fry and disintegrate quickly then you have to do a water pump rebuild again. Try it in deeper water or on muffs, you may be lucky and didn't fry the impeller last time.

Oh yeah, forgot to add...see if the pee tube/hole is clear. Mud dobbers love to build nests in any kind of hole they can get to. You can use compressed air or a flexible wire to rod/blow out the pee line/hole. No thermostat on this year Merc 500.
