Water pressure gauge. You can't tell pressure by looking at the stream. All you can tell is that you have some. The idea behind a pressure gauge is to install a new impeller when the gauge is added. You then note idle, mid and wot water pressure. Any deviation from those numbers down the line is an indication that the water pump needs attention.

Good tip to get the numbers started out right-
I'm just tired of straining my old neck around to see the tell tale ( still a new to me motor & i may be a bit over cautious )
I'd rather just be able to glance down to a gauge

Re: Pee Stream/Water Pressure Gage

After using one for several years, I would not have a main engine without a pressure gauge installed.
Just as Silvertip says below, it is right in front of you and you can see what is going w/o looking back all the time.

It is especially important to have a water pressure gauge for the reason you mentioned, turning your head! But the real reason to have one is if you can't see the tell tale. Besides, the gauge is right in front of you. You should be checking gauges every time you start your engine and every few minutes when under way. I think the previous poster meant he would not have a main engine "without" a water pressure gauge.

Thanks- one word makes a big difference :D

I have no idea
Personally i'm in the market for either- I care not as long as it shows pressure

15# will do. But the readings will be meaningless unless you install new water pump impellers. No two engines will provide exactly the same pressure so the idea is to install a new water pump. Note the idle and WOT readings (on the water -- not on muffs). Any deviation later means the water pump needs attention.

Re: Pee Stream/Water Pressure Gage

I installed a pressure gauge several seasons ago and I would not own a boat without a pressure gauge. With that said, I still had an overheat situation earlier this year, and I had good water pressure when the overheat alarm sounded. Turns out my impeller was fine, but my thermostats were bad. As part of the repair I installed a temperature gauge. Now I have a working water pressure gauge, engine temperature gauge, and an overheat alarm.

Water Pressure Gauge = Tells you what is about to occur.
Temperature Gauge = Tells you what is occurring.
Overheat Alarm = Tells you what just occurred.

I like having all three systems to help me measure performance.

Actually, the water pressure gauge tells you ONLY that you do or do not have water pressure (e.g., the water pump is or is not working). Just because you have water pressure does not mean the engine is being cooled properly. Head gaskets, diverters, bypass valves, thermostats, etc can all affect engine cooling even though water pressure reads normal.

Understand, at this point in this boat (hoping to move up next season) i'd just like to glance at a gauge instead of turning my 60 yr old neck around :p
