Pellet stove

I just got done installing my pellet insert this morning. The thing heats good, and is very efficient, very little ash or byproduct at all. <br /><br />I was under the impression that it would be more of an intense heat like my wood stove. Any of you guys have any experience with these stoves? Was wondering if there is a lot of difference in brands and quality of pellets? Could this make a noticeable difference in the burn of a pellet stove? <br /><br />Don't get me wrong the thing heats the place real nice, just wondering is all.

Hi Flahthead, can't help you with the pellets. But was wondering if you can also burn corn in your stove?<br /><br />A few people around here are burning corn.<br />Don't know if it makes a difference on what type of corn they burn either.<br />I'm in farm country, so these guys are burning what they grow.<br /><br />Is there more heat/energy in $5 worth of corn, or $5 worth of pellets? Or do I need to compare bushels of corn?<br /><br />DOH !! This is getting too confusing.

Roscoe, Yes I could burn corn shelled corn in the thing. Not sure what difference it would make as far as throwing heat. In my case a 40 pound bag of pellets runs about three dollars and fifty cents. A 50 pound bag of shelled corn runs about 6 bucks. So it will be pellets for me. But if I was growing corn you bet I would be burning that.<br /><br />The nice thing about a pellet stove is the fact that you can run it when your not home. Mine has a regular thermostat that will turn it on and off when it calls for heat. No need to worry about setting the place afire.

OMC. I love the pellet stove. It gets the job done with a minimal of work. Empty ashes once a week, as well as clean out the fire pot once a day..Takes about five minutes. Fill er up and let her go. It will cycle on and off on its own as the thermostat call for heat. The pellets come in 40 pound bags so they are easy to handle. I used about three ton last year. never once turned on the regular heat. The cost of pellets went up from about 170 a ton last year to around 200 a ton this year. Still very cheap way to heat my house compared to what the electric would be. I did find that there are different quality of pellets but the diff is so small it hardly matters. The only draw back is my garage has tons of pellets in it and makes it tight to work on my stuff but I get by.<br /><br />I understand the price of pellet stoves shot up pretty good when the oil crunch started!<br /><br />Still like the wood heat too. I'll fire up the wood stove on the weekends. Nothing like the heat that a wood stove throws!

Thanks Flathead, I gotta do something different. I heat with LP and its well over 2 bucks a gallon. Looks like I'll be between $1500-$2000 for heat this winter.

OMC , I hear ya. Heating cost are going to keep going up. Maybe a wood stove would get you over the hump. Drop a hardwood tree or two per year to burn.<br /><br />That said , a decent stove is not cheap these days.
