Re: Pen Yan tunnel drive

no direct experience. I was considering buying one (the flybridge model), and let myself be talked out of it -- was told it is very difficult to control when backing because of the rudder configuration. I bought a single engine Chris Craft express instead, and find that it is very difficult to control in reverse. I think it's just a problem with single engine inboards, and I'm betting the tunnel drive would be no better or worse.

Re: Pen Yan tunnel drive

I have a Tigercraft that has a tunnel drive very similar to Pen Yan...

It is a very efficient setup.. Basicly Just a regular ol' straight inboard that has a slightly flatter shaft angle and less draft than a typical inboard because of the tunnel... That flat shaft angle helps push the boat forward instead bow down..

I can best describe it as a typical straight inboard's (no tunnel) like running an outboard trimmed in all the way down... It wants to force the bow down... The tunnel allows the flat shaft angle which is more like trimming an outboard to it's optimum angle pushing the boat forward instead of wanting to force the bow down...

All single screw inboards suffer from poor manuverability in reverse...
