Hello All,

New here, but looking for a Volvo Penta SX transom assembly. Goes on a 2001 Glastron 205 F/Ski with a 5.0 GL motor.

Part of the casting that holds the main shaft is completely cracked and there's a severe vibration issue as well as taking on water in the bilge.

Please let me know if you know of any good used parts as the Marina wants $1,500 for a new one.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Re: Penta SX Transom Assembly

I bought a pivot housing (which is the broken component in your photo) on ebay a few months ago for $250- they are out there. There is a casting number on the bottom of the housing and you can match up your replacement by that. Possibly speak to the marina and tell them you are on a budget and are interested to see if they will do the repair even if you come up with a couple of replacement components. Or if you have the space to work on it, do it yourself if you are a do-it-yourself guy. Pulling the outdrive is within normal annual servicing and pulling the pivot housing involves just a few additional steps and is not difficult.

The other option is to find a junk outdrive and harvest the pivot housing off of it - its not really a component which gets damaged (except in your case.....)

How did it break?

How did it break?

Good question as I wasn't boating hard (just 20mph or so pulling a tube). Didn't hit anything. I suspect there was a crack that had been growing for some time, as the last year or so, she began taking on a bit of water... finally cracked enough for the bellows to come off. Actually I just double checked. It's not the pivot housing, rather the Gimball housing. I pulled back the bellows and some parts of the bearing (race and a couple of balls) fell out. Hopefully drive line is good, just replace housing and gimball bearing

Hopefully can find that casting used..Thanks for the help.

I think ya should take it apart and see what else is damaged before ya start ordering parts. If parts of the bearing came out, there may be other components damaged.

Looks like damage from running the engine with the drive tilted all the way up and turned to the right.

Good idea... Taking it apart tomorrow... I was just trying to nail down the big expensive casting as it's the most expense and the rest are "relatively" inexpensive. I know I'll need a Gimball bearing and likely a u-joint as well

We're talking about the same component- you'll find it listed as both gimbal housing and pivot housing, but as long as you search your replacement parts by the stamping number you'll be fine. Like grub said, see what components you are dealing with before ordering everything but I'll tell you this there is nothing you won't be able to find- I just went through this process this spring and had to replace my gimbal/pivot housing and some other components.

We're talking about the same component- you'll find it listed as both gimbal housing and pivot housing,

Gimbal housing is the transom shield assembly. The pivot housing it the part the drive bolt up to.
The ujoint bellows connects the gimbal housing and pivot housing.

Thanks for clarifying that Don. When I purchased my components the seller had the items incorrectly titled which got me thrown off, especially when I looked at my receipt earlier.

Eric, have you tried any marine salvage yards or searched craigslist for salvaged boats?

Great idea... looked a little on craigslist, but it's somewhat painful looking city by city... wish they had a USA based search engine... Salvaged boats would be all right, but not really interested in taking on the whole boat. I'm based in Indianapolis any one know a good salvage yard in the "Great Lakes" area??

You might find someone just trying to part theirs out, as you are right, you don't want a whole boat. As for salvage yards, plenty of them ship so I wouldn't limit yourself to local places. Shipping would only run you $50 - $75. Just google marine salvage to get you started and start calling. Try to get your casting number and SX-? model number first.

Thanks Other Dave... Search tempest is cool. Augoose, do you have a contact on eBay (store or username) that you've used to purchase your parts from... No luck there.

Thank you all for all the advise and help.

OK... Think I found a great deal... Complete Gimball Unit: Gimball Housing/Pivot housing/rail/seal/bearing/bellow (Exhaust and U-Joint) for $800... rebuilt (new bearing/bellows). Sounds like a great deal. Was $1,000, but asked him to keep the cylinders as I didn't need them. And that's in Loonies... (so 5% off)... 100 CAD to ship to Indiana
