Wow....hijack much?

You forgot to mention that the points burn up faster if you pull the full 12Vdc through them under normal running conditions.

The second page of this thread is written like it's almost the same person writing for both people.....whatever, the information is still usable.

A well maintained conventional points system, correct timing and dwell should work just fine with the stock coil. The Petronix Ignitor II should be paired with the Flamethrower II, 40,000 V coil. One advantage of the Petronix is that at higher RPM it electronically adjusts dwell to improve ignition. The Petronix may give you better starting and a smoother running engine, not sure that you would see a real big difference in fuel economy.

Update for whoever cares,

I just installed the pertronix device and coil in my port engine (180 hp 470) and can confirm the harness wire is an 18awg.....MAYBE 16awg...definitely not 14awg. My jumper wire happened to be 14awg and it was a size down from what was in the harness.

The wires coming off the device itself is also 18awg although pertronix uses a hypalon jacket probably due to the chance of melting the wires due to misrouting. Hypalon wire can take some serious heat before becoming damaged.

The motor roared to life with a slight bump of the key (cold start) and lumbered down to an idle in 10 seconds or so...definite change in personality from the way it started before.

I will clean up the wiring tomorrow and set the timing and repeat on the starboard side Wednesday

Hi. Question. Do you have to cut the original purple wire? I currently kept the original wires & added a spliced wire from the choke. She starts right up but have only test run it. Will this cause me an issue after long use? Thanks in advance.
