magster,

All those Astro (spy camera equipped) vans ended up here in Arizona.

Maybe the government of BC paid some "snowbirds" to drive them down here. :D

Re: Photo radar

hehe... Wouldn't doubt it. It was mentioned already but the vans were put in areas that the speed of traffic was a little faster. One spot nearby is a 4 lane wide straight road at least 2 miles long with a speed limit of 30 mph. It took everyones picture and there was never a crash there in the last 20 years that I know of. It was a cash grab.

Re: Photo radar

this is going on old info. we've had the lightpole cams here in atlanta for a couple years now, and probably got the idea from whatever the west coast(CA) has success with. as for the snapshot cams, from what i remember on a techtv show, the cams are at intersections. they use laser eyes. they snap for timing sensors measuring speed vs state of light, ie amber or red. and they get forward and back shots, to get driver & tag... just what i'm remembering.

but this is the first mention i've heard of the strobe redlights using cams inside. i always thought they were strobed just to get more attention. you know, people are more distracted nowadays, with dragpiped harleys, 1000watt stereos, and cell phones ;)

Re: Photo radar

Yea, they just installed those "red light cams" at one of our busiest intersections.

It sure is fun watching the people slam on their brakes now! It's even better when you see a person on a cell phone getting their picture snapped while they drive through the red light.

I wonder if a person could win the fight if YOU hit the guy in front of you while HE slammed on his braked to avoid the red light cam?

Don't know about other states, but in Oregon it's almost an automatic "your fault" if you A-hole the guy in front of you, no matter what he was doing.

H.

Re: Photo radar

Homerr, There should be 2 different ways the photo radar works.

1. is the usual Radio Frequency (RF) gun. This measures the frequency shift of the signal reflected from your car. This radar can work up to a mile away when it is using the X-band. The Ka band does not have as much range. If the X-band hits you so far away, there is very little chance that they can actually tell the speed was yours and not from other vehicles etc.

2. Is the laser radar or LIDAR. It measures the amount of time that it takes an infrared signal to be reflected off you car. It Keeps sending these out and takes the time between succesive beams and compares it to the different distance reading thus giving your speed.

To detect all of these signals, you would need a radar detector that also has laser radar detection capability.

Here is a link to the how stuff works site. They explain Radar, Lidar, and Radar detectors. Also here is a link on how to beat the photo cameras. This may be legal or illegal in your state.
The second link if for informational purposes only amd may help to understand photo radar.

How Radar works including speed detection

Defeating photo radar

I don't know about other states, but here in Kentucky, they will set up in a median or on ramp and use radar and another officer will be down the road pulling the cars over.

Also have seen airplanes clocking drivers and police cars pulling them over.

They have these little gray Mustangs they love to use. :D

P.S. scoops second link.
web page

Re: Photo radar

Thanks for the info. I'll check the site out.

My detector does it all, lazer and the whole She-bang.

Although "they" say Oregon doesn't use lazer (yet) I'm sure they have it deployed somewhere.

We also have the airplanes on the highways.
