Re: physical pain

this ranks right up there.
I had nasal surgery and when the doc went to take the packing out of my nasal cavity.....WOW!
5 feet of cotton(or something like that) was shoved into each nostril.
He just kept pulling it and pulling it out of my nose. Lots of blood and mucous. Hurts just thinking about it.
then he asked me if I wanted 10 minutes to rest before he did the other nostril.
I said no, you just get it out.
I think I should have waited 10 min.

2 years later, same surgery, same packing.
Nothing like knowing how much pain you are going to be in and nothing you can do about it.

Re: physical pain

I needed an operation on my hand. So they gave me a local ansthetic which consisted of 4 shots in the arm pit. The needle was semi dull to be able to feel the main nerves, this was given by an intern being it was a teaching hospital. I listened to the whole thing cause I was awake. About 6 doctors observing. He missed all 4 times and had to do it again. Also had a kidney stone, these were both number tens on the scale of pain for me.

Re: physical pain

I thought my herniated disk was painful at the time but by far the worst pain I have ever had was associated with the early to mid stages of my rheumatoid arthritis. My legs hurt so bad that if I could have gotten to my chain saw I think I would have cut my legs off just to get rid of the pain. One of the side effects of the meds they gave me was possible sudden death but I didn't care because dead would have felt a whole lot better then what I was going through. I still have daily pain but it is controllable most of the time.

Re: physical pain

I had a mild sprained ankle (so I thought) and the wife said put a heating pad on it. The problem was it was bad enough the blood oozed out of the ankle into the tissues and the heat made it faster. After I colapsed when standing up the wife took me to the ER. Found out it was actually cracked and the heat made it worse than worse.

Kidney stone...

Worst pain a guy could go through...

Much like child birth I'm told.

I'd rather have a root canal during a prostate exam than to get another kidney stone!

I was off work and had to wait about 2 weeks before the 'mobil' truck came around to our hospital that had the stone-busting equipment.

H.

ah!.. I see DJ has the same opinion as I about ol' Saw-Bones....

Done the impacted tooth thingy a couple times.. Was'nt the pain so much before, durring removal, and after, but that lack of sleep was bad... ahhhh.. Vicodin sp?... Only needed 1... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

My coupe-de-grass... Picture a die grinder spinning about 10,000 rpm, chucked up with a carbide rotary rasp and an idiot (me) holding a piece of aluminum in hand and grinding/shaping rather rapidly the afore-mentioned piece of aluminum.... slip.. Took out two fingernails, part of the thumbnail, and a whole bunch of skin off three fingers, the thumb, and other areas on my left hand... Pefect pattern of cuts from the rasp, kinda like hamburger... No medical attention necessary... No pain at first... Pain came later, when I washed it out... One nail still messed up and don't wanna grow rite (middle finger) three years later..

Roadrash from a bicycle wreck.. Tried to grind my left shoulder off on the asphalt...

Concussion... H2O is pretty dang hard.. Headache for quite a while..

thats about it.. knock on wood

Re: physical pain

Back when I was twentydumb, I was working under a car. It was in the yard so I put a piece of plywood under the jack. Apparently it wasn't enough because before I realized the space under the car was getting tight, I couldn't get out. I was being squashed. Finally the weight of the car was on my chest. It was painful, but the fear of not being able to get out was the worst. Couldn't scream if I wanted to. After 5 hours, my fishing bud came to the house to see why I didn't show up to go fishing.

You bet your sweet bippy that I use jack stands and only on a hard surface before I work under a car anymore.

Frostbite from liquid freon was painful on my fingers. It took about 3 months before the skin on my fingers was back to semi normal.

Re: physical pain

Definatley some doozies. So I'll share mine, not worse, just bad.

1) replacing an axle in a 1969 Peterbuilt. The other mechanic couldn't get the axle in, he'd been trying for an hour. I figured I'd give it a shot. After leaning on it and wiggling it around it went in! with my right index finger between the flange and the hub... popped the end of it like a zit, lost the nail, but grew back normal.

2) Installing a lift kit on a dodge 3/4 ton, tightening the radius arms with the latest and greatest impact with a (impact rated) swivel and a 13/16 impact socket. Centering pin broke on the swivel, jumped off the nut, and collided with my hand holding the wrench. Middle finger nail ripped off. grew back normal.

3) Got into an accident with my old Eagle Talon (plastic radiator). Drove 30 min. to work the next day, boss comes out to see the damage. I open the hood and as soon as its propped up, the upper hose breaks. Something that day told me to wear pants and boxers, from the boxers to the knees 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

4) the best for last, Pulinidal(sp?) cyst. about were the tail bone is, normal surgery of cut it out and sew it up doesn't work. Its cut it open, and pack it so it can heel inside out. I figured why go to the hospital to change the "packing". About 20 feet of 1" cotton.. I passed out for a minute or two half way through, just to wake up and finish it. By far the most pain I have ever felt, beat the broken foot and the finger nails hands down, the burn is a close second.

Re: physical pain

Double ruptured L5-S1. Badly pinched the Sciatic nerve and the bones moved and embedded a corner into the nerve heads above them. Couldn't effectively stand, walk, or get out of bed. Lived with it for almost 4mos waiting for surgery. Man i was miserable. For me to be HAPPY about having surgery scheduled (I HATE NEEDLES!)

Still have pain and can't feel the outer half of my left foot and heel. It's amazing what you can get used to....

Re: physical pain

Ok for you all wanting to know I do have a high pain tolarance I did not even feel the pistol grip riffel but go into my mouth when I held the riffel up to my cheek to shoot it. I did not know my wrist was cracked when I broke it I did not know my front teeth were broke off when I fell onto the gymnastic bars leaving teeth marks. But the last stag of labor of transistion was like a ring of fire. and the next 3 days of recovery. Wow
Serenity

Re: physical pain

Had a Pheasant fly out beneath a green-broke Mustang filly about six years ago.
She wasn't big but she knew how to jump.
With-in 1.712 seconds my body reversed itself from 3 ft. above the saddle. The saddle horn rode up my thigh, planted itself firmly into "the twins,Ferdinand and Pedro". Kissed terra-firma where I immediately lost my lunch.
Two hours later in the ER, a hematoma (my third from big animals)the size of a football hanging from my crotch.
Passed out the second time as I watched the doctor probe with a needle the size of a #2 pencil to drain it.

Mom had shoulder surgery Monday morning, bone spurs and check the rotator cuff for a tear. (found no tear)

They used somthing to block the nerves at the elbow and up near her neck. She felt nothing. Shoulder was numb for 18 hours.

The only pain she has had was when she sat in the recliner, so she sat on the couch. Its been 40 hours and still no pain.

The same doctor gave her cortisone shots in her knees with no pain. ???

I have his name just incase I ever need that type of work done.

My bosses son was only in Iraq 4 weeks when his Humvee hit a landmine in Bagdad and exploded.

The driver was killed, the other passenger never made it out of the hospital in Germany and his son was flown from the hospital in Germany to Brooks Amry Hospital in San Antonio last week. He is just now opening his eyes. He has 4th degree burns over 40% of his body.

I can only imagine the painful recovery this soldier will have. He opened his eyes for the first time a couple of days ago, he can't speak and is strapped down since he thrashes about. He has no clue whats happend to him or his comrades.

Say a prayer for him, he has a long and painful life ahead.

4th degree!?

He is in my thoughts LF... And I will be forever grateful for his sacrifice. At least 4th degree burns are so bad that the nerve endings are burned off...

Sean
