pics of cleaning carbs, what am i missing???

alright everytime i explain what is wrong with my boat everyone points to carbs. so after cleaning it over a dozen times, I decided to clean it one more time... I took pics of everything,

all jets are wide open!

i sprayed carb cleaner through all holes untill it came out other holes then shot air through the same holes..

for the first time tonight im going to pull the welch plugs and soak the carbs over night.


What am i missing??? ( also notice the captions on each pic)

doubt this sheds any light, but looking at marineengine.com..your year,hp,model no...it lists different size jets for the 20 and 25 " transom models, and a different jet for the middle carb...have you check your jet sizes vs. transom depth?..did you remove the core plugs on rebuild?

have not removed the core plugs when i rebuilt it, but that the plain tonight, and let them soak

Hi jgriner, I have an Evinrude 70 hp, it has given me grief for a year, perfect on the muffs but cutting out under load when throttling from idle etc. Took carbs off last year, "cleaned" them, no improvement, every time I took the boat out of the water I changed some settings/idle screw/cam roller/plugs/timer base/anything. It just keep pushing the problem around.

Took the carbs off again this week, still look beautifully clean, but on a very close inspection the tiny brass tube (like a hollow needle) that runs through the centre of the carbs had a blockage (on one carb) and this was the cause of my year of troubles.

If only I had cleaned them when I "cleaned" them.

It could be something tiny, so check everything while you have them off.

The welch plugs must be removed before soaking in Berryman Chem Dip. There are lots of fine passages underneath them that can get clogged easily.
I was also taught in mechanics to remove and replace any jet that has a ear or ears broke off. The broken ears will cause turbulence that will interfere with jet performance.

ive ran wire down them in the past, and have always looked down them holding a flash light, untill I could see light, but i will run some more wire down them again ive also got some long torch tip cleaners i and send down their, thanks for the advice.

ive got to run to auto zone and but the carb cleaner when i get back i will remove the plugs and soak them in the cleaner, i will have to order a new jet, then, any ideas where i can order from?

also if i order a new jet can i leave the carbs soaking until they come in? will it hurt them to soak for a few days?

The longest I have soaked in Berryman's is 12 hours. The Berryman's is hot stuff, so do not leave your carbs in them for several days.....they may disappear.....Take them out and rinse with cold water, then blow out all passages with 125lbs. compressed air. Youtube has video on removing and replacing welch plugs. Also keep that carb cleaner away from the kids. That stuff will eat your hide.

Tap a hole in the plug with an ice pick, gently. Then get a bigger tool (nut pick? or nail) and pry them out. It doesn't take much to seat the new ones. Take a drift or round rod about 3/4 the size of the plug and tap the plug in. It makes the plug concave from convex, which seals it in. Do it gently. Anyway, that's the way I did mine and they came out OK. Good luck.
