I decided that I didn't have enough to do, so I built a wood stove for my shop. When I started this I also decided I needed a better work bench. I know a guy that un-packs products shipped in large sheets of styrophome so am going to insulate the shop walls with that. Found some old wood lap siding that I will sheet the inner walls with.

Pics of stove.

It kind of made a mess of the rest of the shop. I can't believe I stored all of this junk on and under my old work bench! Hidden somewhere in here is an old set of gym lockers I use for power tools, my welders, and a car.

Dont believe I would have posted pix 4,5and 6. I put a wood stove in my shop and it sure is nice.unless you get 5ft away from it then your frezing to death. ;) With the temps we have had this year I havent fired it up. Only used the fireplace in the house 1 time.

Re: Pics of yet another project (updated)

Stoves like this I have made in the past, the drum has lasted 8 or 10 years. This one is patterned after a friends that he uses on his alcohol still (for racing fuel only)

I usually build them one drum on top of the other. Bottom drum is for the fire, the top is a heat collector.

Last night I burned a few cardboard boxes and a few sticks to burn the paint off of the drum. With the doors open it still raised the temp in the shop about 10 degrees.

My old shop heater was an amana electric range. I turned on all 4 burners and the oven. Opened the oven door and put a fan on the door. That worked great but was kind of expensive.

I just use a paint can with some holes drilled in it, and a few ounces of burning methanol inside. I've got insurance! :D :p

Of course, it rarely gets below 50 in there...

Today I was struck by a thought.

As I was lighting a fire getting ready to work on my manly space I thought.....

If you have ever included in conversation "my friend used it to cook moonshine" or any sentence dealing with close friends making hooch....you probably ARE a redneck.

Same probably goes for using a 50 galon antifreeze drum for heat.

Good way of getting more heat out of one of those DD- put a slightly wider chimney on route it along one wall at a slight angle then bring it through the roof at the other end of the workshop.

You'd be surprised how much warmer it'll be- we used to do the same thing in the buses we lived in years back-kept them real nice and warm.
