Piston part #s, I'm confused

I had pulled the pistons out of my 72 6HP Johnson the other day, and now I have part number confusion.

The shop.evinrude site shows my piston part # as 376994.

The part # that is cast into the pistons that I just pulled is 303338.

I can't find 303338 anywhere online, and I CAN buy 376994 from BRP.

I'm confused, can anyone help shed some light on this?

There's a good possibility that the numbers were changed over the years.

Dang your quick

That thought crossed my mind, but that usually was noted in the part details. Hence my confusion.

Thank you Zephyr :)

Re: Piston part #s, I'm confused

The casting number of 303338 is simply that, just a casting number that means nothing pertaining to the identification of the piston. It is not a part number and will not be found anywhere in OMC's or Bombardier's brochures.

The piston's part number is 376994 but has been superseded up to number 386692. Either part number will be fine for your 1972 6hp Johnson.

Sometimes casting numbers were part numbers and sometimes not, so be careful.

You are correct, but in this case, it's just a casting number.

What kind of lower unit is that in your avitar. It looks as big as you, but that must be the optical illusion.

That's a regular V6 lower unit, somewhat closer to the camera. Notice the powerheads on a shelf between it and myself....... about a six foot distance.

Yea, I can't see it very well. It's kinda dark in the back ground and it's small. The best I can see is you and the lower unit.:D
