piston ring question

i have a 50 hp mercury early to mid 80's...it is a 2 stroke...is it ok to use automotive piston rings in an outboard?

Bryan, Piston rings are custom designed for the piston. I doubt you will find automotive piston rings to fit your outboard pistons. Your dealer or aftermarket sources will have rings for your pistons. If you look around the web, you should find a reasonable price ($2-3 ea).

NO

You might get lucky and find rings that look like they might fit the bore and the thickness BUT.....

the rings ENDS are machined to fit the ring locating pin pressed into the piston

2 stroke rings are located, not free to rotate around the piston as the ends could snag a cyl port and self-distruct.
