SORRY to mention OIL ... That goes 10 clicks either way of the recomended 25- 40... $23.50 for a 5 qt jug at Wally World In my 86 4.3.. Can any one tell me a good reason why I shouldnt ? I think I have Mobil 1 10-30 in there now. Read pretty good things about wix filters. Boat in Mn 60 deg and up for the most part.... Um.... did I remember to say sorry for mentioning oil ? Sorry

Oil threads are good.
Oil rants are the pill.
Paul I wouldn't balk at the filter as long as it cross-matches the original spec;
then it will have the correct "guts" inside for your motor requirements.

The oil....well I'm not the last word here but I try to use original spec. unless I'm having a problem with an engine, Now in your case you're going thicker and thinner.
I might go thicker but I wouldn't go thinner.

Buuuut... will it hurt you?
Probably not.

I would not use syn in an original engine that old...why not just use what Merc says...either their conventional 25/40 or straight 40 if over 50* F....I use straight 40 Chevron Delo 400 and the oil pressure is about 20 psi (hot) at idle and 55 psi at 2000 rpm...BTW the temp was about 55* today and it started right up even after sitting out on the mooring for a month of not running....

Thats what confuses me... How can it be thinner AND thicker ?

The reason I like syn is cuz every thing I read about it states it gives better protection, all the oil molocules are the same -round-shape like marbles.. not all different-like gravel- it doesn't break down as fast. better sludge resistance. better heat tolerance. I know some say it isnt as desitrable in older engines, but the only reason I have heard it that it can leak easier as it will flow into every nook and crannie.. So far- no leaks > so i am not concerned about that aspect

Thats what confuses me... How can it be thinner AND thicker ?

The first number... the 15, is how thin it stays when it's cold outside.
the Second number, the 50, is how thick it stays when the oil is very hot.

The reason I like syn is cuz every thing I read about it states it gives better protection, all the oil molocules are the same -round-shape like marbles..

Your reading to much into it. 15W50 is what I used to run in my Triumph Moto... and that little 600cc was an actual race motor.... 16K RPMS.

Here's the deal, and the 3 big points when choosing an oil......

1. Does it fall into the engine manufactorer range of oil weight recommendations?
2. Is it an actual brand name of oil? (Valvoline, Mobile, take your pick of brand names)
3. Is it on sale?

Those are the 3 things you should be worried about.

"thinner" (as in lower xxW numbers) is not neccesarily bad. My Dodge Charger calls up Mobil one 0W40 (6.1 hemi)

My 07 Jeep with the 5.7 Hemi calls for 5W-20, I use Mobil 1, but I'd never use that in my 98 Jeep with the 4.0 six, that gets Valvoline Max Life 10w-30...

I'll say it again....you have an original engine....not leaking....there is probably some deposits/sludge behind old seals...you put nice syn oil in there....it cleans em out...and the seals can leak....

To me syn oils are great if you can switch to them at a low enough mileage/hrs in the engine's life...I have used syn oil in the diffs of my 98 Jeep since the first change and not only do they not make noise, but the seals still don't leak, same with the transfer case. I did not change the enginet to syn because of the added cost but for each newer vehicle I get in the future I will change them over if the mileage on the engine is low enough. I did this with my 07 Jeep partly because of the fact that they spec such a light oil and I felt the syn would hold up better...

Going a little thinner is ok because within 1-2 minutes its all the heavier weight.

Come on - I'm sure someone can - whether it makes sense or not.

I don't mind oil threads, and you can certainly ask whatever you want.

But seriously.

Do you really think you are going to get an answer that hasn't already been posted a million times?

Me? I say go for it! Use what you like. :D

You should be fine with that oil. The lower first number will help with starting, and reduce engine wear at start-up. The 50W will not do much for you unless you run in very hot temps, or will a very high load. It will reduce your fuel economy a little bit at is will be a 50 weight at operating temps.

Re: Plan to run Mobil 1 15- 50 and a wix filter SORRY TO MENTION OIL!!!

Majority of engine wear and tear happens during first few minutes after cold startup. I prefer grades such a 5W-40 in a commercial heavy duty oil such as Chevron Delo, PetroCan Duron, Esso XD-3 or Shell Rotella T6. Better flow during inital start and you still got the protection that a 40 weight gives at opertating temps. The other side of the flip coin is that a boat engine will probably crater due some other issue unrelated to oil, so any type of oil is good.

I have used that exact oil in mine for 2 years. Works just like it did with the merc oil before it. Will probably use again since I have a half filled quart sitting on the garage shelf from last year 5.5 quart fill.

Hehe yeah that's an interesting question.
The way I understand it,
The manufacturer adds what I think I've heard called long chain polymers to the oil.

Think of a long coil spring on the molecular level.
This is the polymer in the oil. (The additive)
As the oil heats the spring e-x-p-a-n-d-s which makes the oil molecules bigger and thicker.

So thicker when hot.

When the oil cools the long chains contract which makes the molecules smaller and thus the oil becomes thinner.

This is how multi viscosity oils work. THicker when hot; thinner when cold.
At least that's my understanding. :)

Re: Plan to run Mobil 1 15- 50 and a wix filter SORRY TO MENTION OIL!!!

Here is what my Dad told me years ago.He was a mechanic all of his life.
Example,10W-40,The first number is the free flow of the oil.In other words it flows thin like a 10 weight oil.The last number 40 is the viscosity rating. It protects like a 40 weight oil.
This info was given to him by the oil company that sold to him.( Marathon)
They produced the oil just down the road from his shop.

How true this is i'm not sure but kinda makes sense.

The Mercrusier manual I looked at said specifically not to use synthetic oil. Although I agree it is better it is probably related to bearing surface clearances and such.

The Mercrusier manual I looked at said specifically not to use synthetic oil.

Must have been an old manual. You'll find the latest Mercruiser factory recommendations at the bottom of the page here to be enlightening:

http://www.mercurymarine.com/servic...nd-maintenance/faqs/mercruiser/?category=fuel

This crankcase oil recommendation supersedes all previously printed crankcase oil recommendations for MerCruiser gasoline engines. The reason for this change is to include the newer engine oils that are now available in the recommendation.

For optimum engine performance and maximum protection, use the following oil:

Mercury MerCruiser Full-Synthetic Engine Oil, 20W-40, NMMC FC-W rated

If Mercury MerCruiser Full-Synthetic, 20W-40 oils is unavailable, use the following lubricants, listed in order of recommendation. If you are servicing a catalyst engine, use these for short periods of time only.
  1. Mercury/Quicksilver 25W-40 Synthetic Blend, NMMA FC-W-rated 4-cycle MerCruiser oil
  2. Mercury/Quicksilver 25W-40, NMMA FC-W-rated 4-cycle MerCruiser oil
  3. Other recognized brands of NMMA FC-W-rated 4-cycle oils
  4. A good-grade, straight-weight detergent automotive oil according to the last row of the operating chart below.
