The handyman's
secret weapon - duct tape.

Great Duct Tape story.

During a private "fly-in" fishing excursion
in the Alaskan wilderness, the chartered pilot and fishermen left
a cooler and bait in the plane. And a bear smelled it.
This is what he did to the plane.
The pilot used his radio and had another pilot bring him 2 new tires, 3
cases of duct tape, and a supply of sheet plastic. He patched
the plane together, and FLEW IT HOME !

DuctTape -- Never Leave Home Without It

Anyone else care to share their best duct tape stories ???

That pilot must have grown up on a farm. Farm dudes can figure out a way to do anything.

More commonly known as gaffer tape.......been in the film/communications industry since the 50's .
My question is:
Why would the bear of ruined the tires, there's no food in them?

Re: Planes - Bears- and Duct Tape

Actually, gaffer's tape is a bit different than duct tape - the exterior has a bit more of a "fabric" feel to it. The adhesive is different too. I'm not sure that I would want to use it on an airplane, because it probably wouldn't stay for long.

That said, the bush pilot's repair job really isn't all that crazy, at least in the short term to get the plane home. The aircraft is a Piper Cub, which is a fabric covered airplane anyway. The substance that is used "harden" the fabric (it still flexes somewhat) is commonly referred to as "dope." Further, the aluminum aircraft of the fifties and before, usually had fabric covered control surfaces.

What I wonder about the most, is an Alaskan bush pilot who is dumb enough to leave food in his airplane. Other than operating out of a few grass fields and some seaplane flying, I'm a "lower 48 type" and even I know better than that!

I'd be most worried about the elevator. They don't show how he fixed that. I doubt just a simple duct tape job would allow it to operate correctly and it looked pretty mangled.

Thank you, that's EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Ditto on the elevator for me. How you could fix that is beyond me.
