Re: Planting Grass

Hey ralph,
Hydro seeding(looked into it) is 5 cents for 10 sq. ft. (and apparently that is a cheap quote)It would cost me too much as well as the problem of run off until it sprouts. We use hydro seeding on our sites ( Iwork in construction) and sometimes it works great but so far this year Im prett disapointed. Was done 2 weeks ago on one site and still nothing sprouted. First im getting a couple of loads of topsoail delievered so I will have 2 inches covering the rocky dirt I have in my front yard, In my back yard I do have some grass so its is more like repairing big patches. Im guessing sod is quite expensive. but man it sure would be nice to have rock and clay one day grass the next. :)

Re: Planting Grass

Mike-
Here in KC again. Part of my lawn iz Zoyzia. Zozia is very hardy but tough on your mower and you if you have to push mow. You can tell adefinate difference in the mowing.
hay works pretty well unless we get a gulley washer like we had a couple of weeks ago. You will get unwanted seeds from the hay, but once lawn is established yu can treat with weed n feed to begin killing the weeds.

Re: Planting Grass

Thanx Dhud,
Im thinking you my be on to something. At this point I think weeds would look better then dirt so I will have to look into that type of grass and prolly use hay. I can spent all summer dealing with weeds and I think it will be better then all spring trying to convince the wife on the more expensive methods :) :) :) Not to highjack my own post but have you heard any fishing reports up by you? Being that Im new to this area Im not used to being able to fish on open water at this time of year and I got the itch.

Hey dhud64 -

Other than being tough to mow, do you like the Zoysia? Does it look like a regular lawn? Are all the things they claim true? I am thinking of planting some this year and just let it take over. I haven't yet because I was concerned that it wouldn't look or feel as good as a rye, fescue, blue grass lawn (the typical NE mix)

mikeandronda,

Growing grass in your yard is illegal!! :D

I can't believe your really going to grow grass in your yard, I didn't think you were that type.

I ain't never heard of the grasses that everyone here has been suggesting, but "Maui Wowie" and "Indica Gooey Gumbo" were my favorites, back in the day. Oh they were so green and aromatic.

I don't know the best type of grass they are growing these days though, but I'm sure one of them grasses will grow in your area. ;)

Just remember, plant the seeds about an inch and a half in the soil, water lightly twice a week, and hope for the best.

:D I crack myself up! :D

Re: Planting Grass

Ralph-

Zozia is pretty nice. It takes a long time to green up in the spring, but stays green longer in the fall. Also, it is very thick but does not choke out all weeds. There are less weeds there than in the rest of the lawn where I have a mix of bluegrass, rye, and tall fescues.
I've lived in this house for 10 years and the Zozia has spread but I would not say it has spread significantly.
Also, it seems to be disease resistant.
Hope this helps!

Re: Planting Grass

hey ralph, zoysia is probably a good choice if you're in the right zone. its alittle close on my region, but my parents have it in TN. its not as drought hardy as bermuda, IMHO

its got a wider blade closer to rye, not as fast growing as bermuda, but close. looks great, the emerald is what they have. it looks really great. but it takes awhile to fill in, and will be kinda hi/low looking mixed with the tall grasses. but they did it that way. give it @ 4yrs and you'll be set.

as a last thought, this kind of yard is like a new level of upkeep. it looks fine in a smooth evenly graded lot, but the tall grass can be mowed higher, and 'smoothes' normal lots better. give zoysia & bermuda 4" and you're seeing a yard of seed tops.... just my 2c

if you're not used to mowing this kind of grass you will be in need of a good bagger mower with strong hp. it is easier to keep the weeds out though, since you can spray killer on it during the dormant winter period. also, where you worked with fescue types to fill spots, and don't have to with this stuff, by the same token you will be working to keep it pulled out of spreading into places you do not want it :)

Snapperbait when you're ready for a pond let me know and I'll help all I can. When I had my landscaping business (Surf and Turf Landscape) ponds were my speciality. Just finished my latest at my new house. They are worth every penny (not necessarily a lot of$$$) for the comfort and peace they provide!
