The plastic plug on the power trim unit broke on my 88 Mercury 115,

I tried to heat a srew driver and melt it into it,that didnt work, wont move!!

Can i just leave it broke? I dont want parts to fall into the unit!!!

Is there any other way to make the motor move up and down if the trim stops working if that plug is broken?

I saw the same post yesterday, yes? Easier for everyone to follow along if you follow up in the original thread.

What do you mean by broke? Is it in pieces or just deformed from trying to remove it? A picture would be great so we can be sure we are all talking about the same thing.

Is the trim operational now?

Re: Plastic plug broke,now what?

The same thing happened to me 2 years ago. I tried to drill out the plastic piece then all the fluid poured onto the rocks on the beach. Spent the rest of the day cleaning up the oil so that the neighbors wouldn't call Dept of Environ. Management. Worst day of my life working on the boat. Finally caved in and bought a whole new Power tilt/trim unit for $800. I'm not sure of the threading of the plastic screw but could probably drill it out carefully, put in a Heli-Coil and use a stainless bolt with anti-seize on it. Just make sure you get all the plastic and metallic bits out of the unit. I had to do this on the water as the power tilt was stuck down.

Its deformed now from trying to get it out!!! What if i was just leave it alone and if the pump does die i can just drill it out so the motor will go up!!

I think if i drill it out alot of the parts of plastic will fall inside..Then i will need a whole new pump!!

What do you think of just leaving it broke off and if the trim motor give up just drill it out?

A couple of years ago I had the same problem. I drilled into the plastic a little ways and used a ez out to remove the screw.just drilled in until the ez out caught.

I can't remember the exact length but it about 2-3" in my 94 150 Black max.It is a steep down screw I believe 3 with o rings.I only drilled 1/2-3/4" what I do remember for sure is that up here the screw was $55.00.

Thanks DVL I guess i am going to just fill it in with epoxy and if the tilt goes i will just drill threw the epoxy!! If i could get it out clean $55 would be cheap compared to a unit!!!

Re: Plastic plug broke,now what?

I have used plasty zap to glue a hard plastic bolt to remove before. It is a plastic super glue sold in hobby shops. Good luck Tim
