Can you post some pictures of what is getting hot?

just put new shift cable on red from engine to outdrive

Does that mean you just installed a new shift cable, it's red in color, and goes from engine to outdrive?

There is NOTHING on or around the shift cable that should get hot. PERIOD!

I think u mean the casing guide? I don't see how it could have melted. Did it come disconnected & touch the manifold or another part of the engine? Sorry, but I think you're out of luck. You may need another cable. If it's melted as bad as u say no way in h*ll will u ever get it adjusted properly which means you're lower unit will dynamite.

Do u have the old cable? You may be able to swap out the casing guide, but I'm not sure. But first you need to find out why the new one melted.
