Plastic straw in crank case J110TLCCA

I was fogging my 1988 Jonhson 110 (J110TLCCA) and the red plastic straw that fits on the aerosol nozzle blew off and went right into the motor. The piston was all the way on the downstroke so it looks like the straw found a port in the cylinder wall and went all the way into the crank case. Just looking for ideas on how to get it out. I know some degree of dissassembly is required but what is the easiest / most cost effective way?

hmmm.......well for starters, don't start the motor, or let it turn over in any way. It's probably easiest to simply remove the head to gain access the straw. Hopefully, it's still visible and you can grab it and go. You can then install a new head gasket and it should be all set. If that doesn't do it you may also have to remove the exhaust plate.

Re: Plastic straw in crank case J110TLCCA

I just took a coat hanger and gently probed the cylinder walls. I determined that the only exposed ports are on the exhaust side and since I haven't rotated the motor at all I assume that the piston wasn't down far enough to expose the intake ports. If this is the case, the only place the straw could have gone is into the exhaust.
Does this make sense? If so, I'll start by removing the exhaust plate.

Run it. It will burn away.

That's the plan but I'm going to put a borescope in there just to see if I can see it and also to make sure the intake ports aren't open.
I have a high end borescope at work that I can borrow so I'll have a look Monday night.

I wouldn't run it, until it is out of there. It may be only plastic, but it can possibly damage the engine. Is seems like the reed box should have stopped it from going in?

I was spraying directly into the spark plug hole when the straw blew off. If the bore scope confirms that its in the exhaust system there shouldn't be any danger in running it.

jmo, but i wouldnt consider running it until the whole straw was accounted for and removed.

JMO....It doesn't belong in there and should be removed. Regardless of where it is.

I agree with daselbee. I had this happen to me some yrs back, I couldn't find the straw so I just ran it with no ill effects. After all, it's just plastic so it will just burn up.

But Bobbie.... he needs that straw to put back on the can :)

I was under the impression that he was spraying into an open spark plug hole, the straw flew off, and it is possibly right down the ol' exhaust port chute.....if so....run it. Next time he does a WP job, he will find burnt straw in the exhaust area of the LU...maybe...

I would just run it.

EDIT: Think of the broken bolts he will encounter on that exhaust cover......what is this...a V4 crossflow with a flat back...I guess. Possible water leaks when replacing the cover....urrffff....

Oh, okay. I didn't realize you were spraying into the spark pllug hole. That is an odd one though, to have it blow off and end up all the way in there. Better be careful about burning up plastic though. The environmentalists might have an issue with that. LOL :D:D

That straw is a petroleum product, once heated it will mostly return to a liquid state. it will be little match for what happens to it in that cylinder.

It's a bubble back but it's only been run in fresh water and I had it off last year without incident.

well, go ahead and pull it. Then you can do the thermos too, since they will be easily accessible. You know what I mean....:D

That's good advice but I just replaced the thermostats last year. I'll be investigating with the bore scope tonight and if I confirm that its lodged in the exhaust I'll be leaving it there and let it burn away.

Re: Plastic straw in crank case J110TLCCA

I found the straw with the bore scope, it's part way down an intake port but is still protruding into the combustion chamber, this means I can simply take the head off to retrieve it. The boat is now in storage for the winter and I'm officially in snowmobile mode so it's going to be a springtime project.
Thanks for all of the input.
