Hey all, great board... 1st post,

Just purchased a mint 22 cabin cruser with a 225 OMC electric shift. (don't worry I got it very cheap) My problem is a "klunk" in the intermediate housing that sounds like it is comming from the flywheel. I think it has to be worn splines on the intermediate shaft and/or the coupler on the flywheel is worn out. The shop is going to run the boat in the morning and I expect them to be pulling the drive and removing the intermediate shaft to look for wear. Question: If we pull the engine and have the coupler changed and I get a new intermediate shaft and coupler what year should I get that will still fit yet have the stronger splines? I do not want to go with the '72 series as I have read on this board that they are prone to this problem. Please let me know what year shaft and coupler would that would still mate up with my 72 ele drive. I plan to replace ball gears on both as well. Thank you so much.. wish me luck!

You want to get the larger 20 spline shaft and coupler. The early ones had very small splines and were prone to deterioration. Apparently the later, larger spline shafts and couplers never wear out. I believe the ones you want are for the 79 thru 86 models. Of course you have to match the engine. Is yours a ford 351w?

Re: Please Help: 72 OMC ELE 225

Thanks Boomyal,

Just the guy I was looking for! (I have read some of your old posts on this issue) I have a Chevy 350. So the 79 thru 86 shaft/ball gears will fit as long as I get the right coupler to match the chevy? Only problem I would see if the ball gears didn't match up from the 72 leg to the 79 inter shaft. Any good tips on best place I can find these parts fast? Thanks again!

You might try this link.

http://www.sterndrive.info/index.html

They cost an arm and a leg if you buy them new. They keep showing up on ebay, you just need to make sure that they are the late shaft for the right motor. I believe the Chevy shaft is shorter than the Ford. Also the Chevy crank has a larger bolt pattern than the Ford. The ball gears are all the same.

I have been looking at this site a great deal and can't seem to find any couplers. I didn't even think to look for diff between ford vs chevy shaft I just thought OMC 225.
