Please Help 81 E25RCIM 25 HP

I just got this motor. It will start and run but the prop will not turn. I can shift it in gear and the prop will turn the impellor but not the engine. What I am trying to say is that the driveshaft will turn by turning the prop, but the engine will not turn the driveshaft. Does the driveshaft go directly into the crankshaft or is there some type of coupling? It's like something is not connecting the driveshaft to the crankshaft. Please help. Thanks

I'm not sure I follow you.
If the engine is running and pumping water, that means the drive shaft is turning.
If the prop does not turn when you put it in gear, that means the problem is likely in the gear case or linkage. First check the shift rod connector on the side of the leg. Make sure it's properly connected.

Am I understanding the problem or no?

it is NOT pumping water! the driveshaft is not turning. shift rod is fine.

Splined directly into the crankshaft !

Broken shaft or stripped splines.

If anything is bent the continual flexing of the drive shaft as it revolves can lead to it failing due to fatigue.

I am assuming from your description that it does not pump water when running.

Sorry, i'm not trying to be rude. only way the shaft turns is by turning the prop by hand. thanks

i have dropped the lower unit and the driveshaft does not look stripped on top where it connects to the engine. is there a coupler at the engine? or does it slide into crankshaft?

If i were you i would go to Shop.Evinrude.com. There you can pull a complete breakdown of your particular outboard. that should help you to identify any areas to check.

Parts catalog at shop.evinrude.com does not seem to be working at present, but the old parts catalog at crowley marine sees to be ok

No coupling, it just slides into the crankshaft.

Splines rusted away in the crankshaft ??

New crankshaft NLA !

OH NO!!! I just looked up into the crankshaft hole and it looks stripped up in there!! So I have a good running engine with a bad crankshaft!! Bummer...........Anyone know of a fix???? Crankshaft no longer available.

Run the part # Vic gave you on ebay, buy it now at 80 Bones out of Texas.
