One thing that might help a lot, is to isolate the engine from the helm.
Disconnect the main harness plug from the engine and see if you still have power to + terminal of the coil. If you do have power, you know the problem is on the engine.

..... If that's the case, pull the main harness plug out (the one that runs up to the instruments) and re-check the coil. Still power? problem is in the engine harness. No power at the coil? Problem is in the instrument harness. This is the 'divide and conquer' method... ...

Ok I disconnected main harness and still have power to both sides of the coil

Unplug the purple and the red/ purple wires from the alternator.

Ok I unpluged the wiring harness and took the wires off the coil and still had power from the purple wire. comming from the harness

Did you see this before you last post?




If you still have power on the purple wire after disconnecting the alternator, then you have a problem with the wiring on the engine somewhere. Either hooked up wrong, spliced where it shouldn't be, melted and shorted, hard to say after the previous "electricians" worked on it.

The purple wire should only have power to it coming from the ignition switch. It should only go to 2 places, the alternator and the + terminal of the coil. There is one other purple wire in the short harness that connects to the ignition amplifier to the coil. NOTHING else should be hooked to to that wire.

Have you traced out the wires per the wiring diagram in the manual. Here is is by itself.

Ok well I just connected every thing back up and it tuns off from the key

what does it sound like it might have been loose connection mybe. everything felt tight when i was taking it off..

Loose would cause it to not work at all. You still have a problem, it's now just hiding. May be in the engine plug itself or near it, and moving it around while plugging it back in separated the wires that were making contact.
