Hello everyone,

i am very new at the forum scene. please dont judge. i recently bought a 89 maxum with a 89 force 85hp motor. i have already went throught the carbs. getting ready to put them on and also going to do the water pump. but when i went to find the serial number/ model number tage on the motor bracket there was a sticker that said serial number and model number but no numbers. i know on my 77 johnson 115 it had a metal tag and my force has a plastic tag but all the numbers got wash away or faded.

heres the question. how do i find out what the model of my motor is.

guestion 2. this boat has been garage kept all of its life. but hasnt been ran for several years. do i need to change the impeller?

Yes,change it. It might work but as it's set for a long time. The vanes have probably set with a curve in each one.
Look on the starter. Sometimes it's still original.
Or under the rear cowl there is a foundry stamp with the year.
Or under the powerpacks is a stamp too.
Post a pic. Including the lower unit and electronics.
Change the gear oil,be crefull. Don't remove the screw on the side of the lower unit. The older Forces have the screw the newer Mercs don't.One pic is the screw and the other is the allen head set screw/drain.

ok so i looked up the number 856A9F AND IT IS THE MODEL NUMBER TO THE MOTOR. NOW WHEN I LOOKED UP THE MODEL NUMBER IT SHOWED THE RIGHT YEAR,RIGHT HORSE POWER, AND ALSO SHOWED THE SERIAL NUMBER BUT I TRIED LOOK UP THE SERIAL NUMBER IT SHOWED AND DOESNT SOHW ANYTHING OX18247. WILL ALL THE MOTORS WITH THE SAME MODEL HAVE THE SAME SERIAL.

Re: please help me serial number/ model number

Usually the model number should be enough to identify correct parts for you motor. You are correct the model number is H0856A89F which indicates an 85HP, 1989 model F motor. Boats dot net can show you the parts list with exploded view of the unit. As for the serial number, no there are more than one serial number for each model.

Re: please help me serial number/ model number

The starter shows it was made in 88, the motor seems to be a 99.
IF??? The boat and motor are the original combo?? You can contact US Marine Corp.
They can tell you the serial #s.
Copy the hull # and they can give you the info.
The 89/85 came in over 60 different models. Each being basically the same with very minor changes.
Why are looking for the serial/model? Need parts? Most Force 85 motors have the same hard parts, except for the impellers.

Re: please help me serial number/ model number

Thats great news. Really the model number is all i need to order parts for the motor. The title to the motor indicates 89year 85 hp also. I made sure all three titles were perfect. So now i can order the few parts i need.
One question though. When changing impeller do i need to do the whole kit or just the impeller? What are your sugestions? And when chaning lower unit oil what plugs do i use and do i fill this model from the bottom like my other boats? Also i am 99 percent posative that the boat motor and trailer are all original. At least i know the boat and trailer are and pretty sure the motor is.

Re: please help me serial number/ model number

Also i took the carbs off cleaned them up and now put them back on. I ready the manual for force 85 hp of that year and it says on the jet to set 3/4 turn out and adjust from there. All three carbs are set at the 3/4 turn out right? Then adjust from there? Also do i want the motor to run a little ritch or lean? I have heared on the force motors that the like to run a hair ritch.

Re: please help me serial number/ model number

After the manual came out, they changed it to 1 turn out and leave it there.
Too rich and it can carbon up.
The impeller in most cases is all you need to change.
Again depending on Model? There are 2 impellers to choose from.
Post a pic of the pump housing and the inside of the impeller housing.

Pic 1 is the drain. The fill is up by the top.You will have 2 screws, one marked fill the other vent.
Pic #2 is the shift pivot pin and it's a do NOT touch.

Sorry I posted those pics before.CRS

Re: please help me serial number/ model number

havent quite got to the impeller just yet getting it fired and running is my first step. but i do know not to run hardly at all. i just want it to where i can hit the key and it will fire up. then shut it off. then impeller. and i will post picks in the next week or so with old impeller and housing. i have looked up the model number at marineengine.com to see what it brought up on the impeller and it shows only one. which im sure its the right one. but should i take the lower unit off first before i order just in case? also what weight of oild for the lower unit?
