What sized engine? If it has a toothed flywheel, go to the local Kragen or other discount auto parts store and get a flywheel holder. About $15. They work perfectly and you don't run as much risk of busting a knuckle.

The right tool for the job is always best.

An impact wrench works great for removing the flywheel nut, but you still need someway to hold the flywheel when re-torqing it.

Please help me with makeshift tool...

Hello All,

I want to make some sort of tool to hold the flywheel stationary while I remove the flywheel nut. Does anyone know of a good way to do this? Thanks in advance for your help...

The best way I know is to use an air or electric impact wrench. You do not have to hold the flywheel if you use one of these.

You might try using and old leather belt around the flywheel, while you turn the nut. The belt will keep the flywheel in place while you tap your wrench or ratchet handle with a hammer, to break the nut loose.

...Bob in Calif...

Saskatoon...I didn't notice that was you, so I do know what engine you have. Really...get the flywheel holder. Anything else is a waste of time on your Johnson.

Perhaps you can borrow one from an auto shop. They all have them. If you have a friend who works at one.....

If you have a two-foot piece of flat stock or angle iron, drill two holes that match two of the puller holes in the top of the flywheel. Use two grade 8 or better cap screws to secure the "handle" to the flywheel. Presto - a two dollar (or possibly free) flywheel holder.

Awesome,
thank you very much. I will try that when my ignition tune up kit comes in. I look forward to buying some stock flat iron and drilling in two holes.

I will let you know how it goes...thanks for your help all.

Upinsmoke,

Good idea. You could also use a couple of the bolt holes that hold the starter gear to the flywheel in the same way. Better leverage, too. Now, why didn't I think of that?

Thanks CATransplant,

I know I never acknowledge everyone for there help all the time but thanks goes out to everyone who takes the time to help. I know I have tried my hardest to help people with things I have and know. I just emailed someone yesterday with a wiring diagrahm of a 35 horsepower johnson. He was happier than pig in $h!^. LOL. I always feel great when I help others out.
Thanks again everyone.

Upinsmoke,Absolutely awesome! I was happy I could find a flywheel holder for 15 bucks, but your idea I can do for free and I love it. Going to go make one right now! Thank you!

Don't forget the ratchet has to go on first before the nut though. ;) It kind of screws up the puller bolt plan.

I used to use a couple of the ring-gear bolts and a peice of flat-bar similar to how Upinsmoke describes. Well, actually an old lawn-mower blade. Then I made the 'Worlds Largest Strap Wrench' as a 'learn how to weld' project. It's uglier than sin but it works fine on Big Twin flywheels.

I have also sucessfully torqued big twin flywheel nuts by jamming the starter's bendix with a peice of plastic/brass/aluminium. But I was prepared to repair the starter if I broke it.

Well, I guess I'm just saying there's lots of ways to skin that particular cat. All without using the right tool. :D
