I have a yamaha 130. I was out on the water and my engine would stall n had a hard time starting it back up. I brought it to a mechanic and he said that the fuel was dirty n water was getting thru my gas cap. He showed me the fuel filter and it had a little bit of a dark reddish brownish color fluid on top of the can and according to him was full of water. He cleaned the tank out with a power washer and soap. Then filled it up with soap and water over night . The problem im having is he told me it took 2 hours to do that. I was shocked by that because my tank is huge and can't be removed. There's only one access hole so i think he could only do so much with the power washer. When I complained about this to him he got mad and said he will not continue. I'm 23 years old and don't k ow much about boats.does it sound like hes ripping me off? Now my boat is sitting up at his yard and hes gunna take out the soapy water outta the tank and said I'm on my own. He said it prob wont start! If someone is out there that can give me some advice i would really appricate it. At this point i will supposedly have a clean tank( which i feel its still going to be dirty). I need to get the boat back to my dock which is a 5 min ride on the water. What should I do? Can I hook up my emergency 6 gallon tank up to my engine? Or I was also thinking to buy a new filter and hook it up just so i can just make it to the dock. His plan was to start at cleaning the tank and then working up to the engine which was going to be 600$. Also I noticed my primer bulb wouldn't stay firm. Any advice would be great thanks

Yes, I would think that a tank scrub may not have been called for, more like a tank drain and new filter. He should have given you a full estimate before proceeding . . . that is pretty much standard.

I thought you have a trailer for this boat? Maybe load it up on the trailer and take it home.?

You could hook up a remote tank to get yourself home on the water.

You need to get a buddy who knows boats, but I am sure you are learning along the way. . . a friend or two can make it so much easier.

totally agree with tpenfield. he should have just drained the tank and put a new filter on it. so you're getting water through the gas cap, so he puts MORE water in the tank? and soap on top of that? LOL

ok, you can change the filter yourself, and you might want to consider adding a fuel/water separator inline between the tank and the engine as well. and obviously, check and change the gas cap if it's really leaking. I just find it hard to believe you're getting very much water through the cap.

it is possible that you bought bad gas. sooner or later it's bound to happen. there are additives that you can put in the gas to take out the water

Re: Please help me with my bad gas situation

Well the boat sat for 2 years and on the inside of the gas cap was corroded and water prob did get in there. And while it sat there it had about a quater tank. And then I ran it for a little while. He showed me the fuel filter and it had some nasty sh*t in it. He also said that my gas tank had water and crap in there. Also all that crap was in the fuel lines. So he cleaned the tank and put new filter and fuel lines and checked to see if it got to the carbs n he said they were fine. In Hines sight if i shouldve checked all that myself but being the fact that i never had the engine checked and stalled i figure let someone check it. So in getting the boat back tomorrow n he said it should be fine.

I am sure they have attachments for cleaning tanks that randomly spray in all directions just like they have for cleaning tanker truck trailers. Would have to leave going for some time to make sure it hits all surfaces.
Just ask him how it was done.
