I noticed that my new 2003 75 hp merc was squealing after coming off WOT to an idle. it sounds like a loose belt, but of course I don't have any belts. What can it be? It runs fine and went away after a minute or so. Please assist. Thanks

Re: Please help with squealing noise

Did your motor receive the proper "break-in" time?
I think it's about 10 hours initially at a 25:1 ratio.New outboards need to wear in a little and get internals seated before normal use. The noise itself could be related to rapid de-celeration.Please wait for other replys. :)

Hi ss Minnow. I was wondering how the new motor was treating you. Must be ok, well except for the squeal. How does the boat run with all that extra power?

Re: Please help with squealing noise

Hi, it runs great, the waves don't push it around like with the 40hp. It runs great, and the gas mileage is good also. I broke it in properly and put 20 hours on it before any WOT runs.

Reel, what is rapid de-celeration noise? Is it normal? Thanks

By the way, thinking back, the 40hp made the same noise after coming off wot. Right before the boat settled back into the water, there was that squeal noise, then it would stop. But the new 75's squeal stayed there at idle for a minute or so. hmmmm.......

Can someone read the description of problem and let me know their thoughts? Also what is de-celeration noise as mentioned? Thanks for any help!

Check engine for vacumn leak, recirculation hoses, primer hoses, carb mounting gasket, intake gasket, fuel pump gaskets.

Re: Please help with squealing noise

I used to have a 40hp 402, and now have a 98 model 40hp 2 cycle on a pontoon and have just purchased a 2003 50hp classic to replace the 402 and I have never heard a squeal noise coming from WOT.
Have you went back to where you purchased the motor to have them check? Since under warranty I wouldn't mess with anything that was not visably wrong as they will blame you for something that was not prep'd correctly.

Re: Please help with squealing noise

Hi SS Minnow,

Clanton's suggestions are good, I have heard a slight sqeaking noise on the 90 hp models (same motor), generally after a good run at WOT but it only occurs at idle or very low rpm and then only occasionally . The noise seems to be around the carbs - airbox area, but was generally found to be a minor fuel restriction or slightly lean mixture at idle / low speed running, the carbs on these motors seem to be very sensitive on settings and don't have secondary pickups but rely on the idle mixture settings to carry through until the throttle opens the butterflies.

Bob

Re: Please help with squealing noise

Thanks for the reply Bob. Should this be something I need to worry about or just live with it? I didn't see any hoses off or loose carbs, etc. Thanks for any info.
