150 is the minimum acceptable voltage when reading the 2 brown wires coming from stator or orange wires going to coils..the site I listed has very specific test for each electrical component and should help you tremendously. it is in my sig just below.

I have done all the tests on that site. I know it says 150v, but I am sure that is relative to the cranking rpm. I am pretty sure that if my rpms were just a little higher I would get to the 150v. Either way I should be getting something decent out of the pack.

Tomorrow I am going to test the timer base again. This time I want to test the power pack side of the plug. That way I will know if the volts from the timer base are making it to the pack. I am really hoping the voltage is not getting through the plug, because if it is then I am lost. That would mean the pack is getting power from the stator, voltage from the timer base, and still not putting out power.

I will give an update tomorrow morning.

Thanks so far guys!

Re: Please help with this Spark!!

Ok heres another update for today. I tested the timer base again and with the power pack disconnected from the base it passes all the tests. But then with the pack connected the volts drop below the minimum of 0.6. While cranking with the pack connected I was getting 0.5 volts.

Can anyone confirm if it is normal for the volts to drop with the pack connected? I am still a bit hesitant since it passes the suggested test with the pack disconnected.

Re: Please help with this Spark!!

What kind of meter you using?
Need to verify part number of stator, timer, power packs.
Stator has a power coil, which indicates a 1989 or later, Voltage output 130+ peakreading meter set on 500 pos.
Timer, part number unknowed. how do you know what specs to use?
Power packs part number unknowned.
Power packs were changing from pos ground to neg ground in 1988.

I am using a cheap multimeter with a DVA attachment. The stator does not have a part number on it but it appears to be the one from a 1988-1992. The timer part number is 542048. Power packs are new cdi packs, 113-3605 i think it was.

I am using specs from the cdi troubleshooting guide.

I will try to id all of these numbers, may take a day or 2. Your meter should be set on 400 volts DC scale. Do no use auto range.

Check the timer number again.

Check the timer number again.

Which number exactly? I checked resistance from the white wire to the green, blue, and purple. All were around 45 ohms with the pack disconnected. With it connected it was around 30 ohms.

Voltage from white to all others was from 0.9-1.5 while cranking with the pack disconnected. With it connected they were all around 0.5. Only one I believe was about 0.8. I think that was the white/blue combo. That one was also the highest with the pack disconnected.

That is the number on the timer base, and it is also the number in the parts catalog. So it should be the correct base right?

CDI and I can not find the pn 542048.
Your ohms test condems the stator. The voltage goes up on the stator when connector, because the capacitor in the pack is not discharging and firing the pack. packs are not firing because wrong timer or bad timer.
I think wrong timer because internal wingings were changes 1988.

Re: Please help with this Spark!!

I could have posted that number wrong. I believe it was 583048. I did not write it down, but I did look at it when I had the flywheel off and I confirmed it as soon as I came inside that day on this website http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1987/E225TXCUB 1987/IGNITION SYSTEM/parts.html.

I know the stator ohms bad, but it is still putting out 140v. That too me should still produce a pretty good spark right?

Your theory is interesting on the timer base though.

Thanks for all your help.
