Changing impeller but am having trouble removing lower unit. Honda bf50a, 3years old. All 4 bolts loosened but unit will not drop. Hate to persuade it with pry bar or rubber mallet. I have manual that covers more than 1 motor. I don't think shift linkage has to be removed up at motor. Any ideas?? Thanks

All Thumbs,

Shift linkage must be removed in order to drop the lower unit. At the top of the lower unit, below the pivot, you'll see a hex shaped nut that joins the upper and lower shift rod. Shift the motor into forward and reverse and you'll see it move. There is also a nut above it to hold it in place. Mark the location (or count the turns) as you undo the nut and it will separate the linkage. Make sure the lower unit is supported since once its free, the lower unit has a tendancy to slip out and fall. Once undone, it all comes apart easily.

Nav

Thanks Nav. Was looking for the linkage to be inside. I have a generic type manual. Feel like a fool , linkage was too easy to find and work with.
