I have a 1990 yamaha 225 engine and it has been rebuilt. At first I was having problems with the boat planing off. A mechanic told me the floats in the carburators were set to low and were not allowing enough gas to power the motor. He adjusted the floats and it fixed the planing problem but now I notice a miss after planing and before I start to lift the motor. The problem seems to be unnoticeable once I start lifting the trim but the top end speed is less than it should be. The mechanic says I may have to enlarge the jets because the bored engine may require more gas to be placed in the carbs. He again tried to adjust the floats but the carbs leaked gas and caused the boat to stall out when first attempting to take off. Lifting the idling lever and then engaging the motor seems to help. Any ideas?
