Please help

My tach is reading 0 with key off when I start my engine tach goes to 4000 rpm seems to go up when I hit the gas but goes back to 4000 it's a 77 70hp Johnson tach lead is hooked up to yellow wire from stator and has good ground and battery wires thanks for any help I'm putting in Tom for test and tune tach is a new addition would love for it to work as I'm trying out a few different props

have you set the tach up for the amount of coils on the stator (on the back of the tach theres a adjustment screw no idea what your should be set to the install manual should have the details)

Everyone says my engine is 6 poles that's what I set the dial to

Does anyone know how many poles my motor has 70 hp 77 Johnson thanks

sometimes the manufacture of the tach does not use the pole numbers i know mine is set to 12. call the manufacture of the tach or for fun just turn the tach to 12 and that should half the rpm. if the rpm stays at 4k then its not the tach or the motor its another problem. (car stores might rent a timing light with digital rpm read out so you can check your tach against the read out)
