Please look at the two photos of my 58 rude 10 hp, I'm pointing at a slot in the magneto base, as you can see by the position of the flywheel key between the 2 photos the base moves, my question is does this slot serve a purpose and does it line up with something? I think I can mount the magneto plate with the slot forward or to the rear? sorry I know this is not very clear, but I hope you can get what I'm asking Thanks.

This is a cover from my 58 rude 10 hp, the paint on the very top portion is from a local hardware store 6.00 a can its metallic cobalt blue, I'm not doing a restoration just fixing it up for runner / user. I found the motor laying in a guys yard he said it had been there for at least 15 years, so far every things been ok on it, Which is amazing I live on Kodiak Island Ak, very salty here, 15++ Alaskan winters laying outside on the ground less than 200 yards from the beach, started up and ran after a points / carb clean. Just got all the new ignition parts, carb kit, impeller etc. in this week.. So if you want a nice paint for cheap, this is a pretty nice choice. cheers!

Not bad for a spray bomb, I actually used a spray can for my engine but I stripped it down and used primer and then finished with real 2 part auto clear so I was going more for restore but yours looks pretty good.

I've never been sure why the slot is there. It's not there on all of the retainer rings. I've never paid any attention to it and have never had a problem....

Coolness. I have a 1958 Evinrude Fisherman that looks almost that nice. I have to go through it and replace the crank and rods in it though, but it'll be a nice motor when I'm done.

Nice job on the paint.

Yea, I agree. I haven't yet seen a purpose for it either. I know I seen that slot on my later model 40's and 35's as well. They probably had some sort of plan for it, that never materialized.

When I've seen 'em, the slot is usually to the rear, so that's how I re-assemble. Probably makes no difference either way though..

Nice work...I finish mine with several coats of Rustoleum clear enamel.

As far as I can figure out, the slot was for manufacturing purposes, to hold it in some sort of fixture for machining. Whatever, it serves absolutely no purpose now. Ignore it.

yeah it does look kinda chewed up :/ I'd probably replace it just to be safe. You should be able to get one from almost any OMC dealer, or maybe right here at iboats, or off of e-bay.

Hi kodibass, thanks, its plasti-kote truck & sport utility acrylic lacquer. If i remember correctly ( i don`t have the can anymore) # 1568. I think its a ford vehicle color. Here is a pic of Plasti-kote #1586 on my evinrude 25hp. Its a bit lighter and a bit more metallic in it.
