Re: Please tell me my outdrive isn't toast

So in addition to my question about the Timken bearings if I do happen to find the tools and do the shimming myself will the same tool work for 1.65:1 and 1.62:1. I have a 1.62:1 ratio.

A bearing is a bearing is a bearing. If you have the number, you can buy it from Fred's auto if you like. The tools are 'all in one' and will do all those ratios just by using it with a different orientation...

Thanks chris, that's what I thought, just wanted to get a more knowledgeable opinion. I'll get the parts going. If my local shop will do the final re-assembly and check the shim measurements then great, if not I guess I'll be looking for tools. Not that having more tools is a bad thing. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks for all the replies.

fwiw,
don't know what your relationship is with your dealer. but i got lucky and my local dealer's tech (the techs personal tools) let me borrow his shim tool. might be worth asking. nothing ventured, nothing gained ya know...
good luck.

that's pretty generous. I know that when I talked to the guy I have used in the past he had never offered to let me borrow or even rent tools. I'm going to try a different shop today, I'll see how it goes.

Maybe if he loans it to you, you could return it with a gift or a bottle or such.

Re: Please tell me my outdrive isn't toast

ok, my outdrive is back together. I had a local shop do the final reassembly. They charged me $90 to check the drive bearing preload, measure and shim. Since I replaced the drive tapered roller bearings and the upper shaft bearing and race they said the shiming did change slightly. So all in all not horrible. $365 for new yoke, yoke seal, tapered roller drive bearings, upper shaft bearing and race, impeller/water pump kit, new tension washer and lock nut, all new upper seals and new gimbal bearing. So now I have to pull the old gimbal and replace. I'll do that in the next couple weeks. I can't believe how warm its been here. I think summer is going to come around pretty early this year. I'll be ready!

Re: Please tell me my outdrive isn't toast

My boat is not back together yet. I filled the outdrive and it has been sitting in my garage since last month. Since I had so much contaminated gear oil in the drive I decided to drain and refill again. I noticed some oil on my drive fins when I went out to drain it. I noticed a drip of oil hanging from the yoke. Dang it! I drained it and pressure tested. I'm still getting some leaking from that front yoke. What? New yoke, new yoke seal! Dang it! I'm taking it back to D & M tomorrow.

I'm going to work on getting the gimbal bearing out. Let you all know how that goes.

Re: Please tell me my outdrive isn't toast

okay, this is how my weekend went. Saturday morning I spend two hours beating the crap out of my gimbal bearing without budging it. Put an additional 10lb weight behind the 5lb weight on the slide hammer, made no difference. I couldn't move the thing. I started drilling it out, when my cell phone rang and a neighborhood friend needed my timing light so he wanted to come by. He looked at my project and asked if he could give it a couple whacks. Four good hits and the bearing comes popping out. Now I'm only 5'6" and about 145 lbs. He is bigger then me, and I guess I just didn't have enough ummph. So at 10:30 in the morning I had no choice but to offer him a beer for my happy success.

I threw some grease on the new seal, packed the gimbal bearing and set both of them in. Took about 2 hours to align the bearing and engine. I have only done it once before and I just wanted to make sure it was good. Wound up lowering the engine about 1 maybe 1-1/2 turns. The alignment bar slide in and out like butter. I got a little more depth on the top then the bottom of the bar, but it was very slight and with the ease of the bar going in and out, I figured it was as good as it was going to get. The oil cooler was hitting the side of the engine compartment and had to be adjusted and the starter was getting close to hitting, so I didn't want to lower the engine any further. The outdrive slide in so smooth I felt good about the whole procedure. Got everything buttoned up and started the engine. Ran her for about 10 minutes to get to about 150 degrees and then put her in idle and watched the temp come down slightly. Turned it off and called it a day. BUT when I turned the engine off I swore I could smell rubber. Then I remembered even though I lubed the seal by hand I had not lubed through the zirk fitting before starting the engine. Could I have done something to the gimbal bearing seal? Or am I just being paranoid?

Just being paranoid.:D Have a good look around and see if there's anything obvious... If not, take it out for a spin and see how it smells after that....

Re: Please tell me my outdrive isn't toast

I couldn't wait, I started the engine again yesterday morning and could tell there was no water circulation in to the engine. I had no choice but to remove the outdrive again and inspect the impeller. I took the upper unit off and inspected my impeller installation and everything was fine. So I started from the gimble housing trying to figure out where my problem was. I discovered the water hose had detached from the barb on the inside of the gimbal housing right above the exhaust bellow. It took me a while but I was able to remove the rear of the outdrive bellow and get the supply hose reattached to the barb. Got the outdrive mounted back up with fresh gear oil and a new gasket and started her back up. Everything worked perfectly. Sure made me feel good. So my quest to get my boat back on the water after my little mess up last year is back on track. Some more cleaning and few more little maintenance items and she will be wet soon.

One question???? I have drained my outdrive twice now and filled with new gear oil because I had water in the outdrive. I am still getting some gear oil that looks like it has water in it. Is it just because of small residue amounts of gear oil that just doesn't drain from the drive? Gear oil is expensive, I don't want to keep draining and refilling.
